Not the same thing. Elvis, Beatles, Black Sabbath were famous because they had great songs. Regularly had #1 songs. They had image but thats not why they were famous or relevant.

There are plenty of pop singers who very good singers. Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande,etc. In fact most popular pop singers are very good singers. Now these singers also have their image but they also have very nice songs and are very good singers.

 

I don't know why you're using buzzwords that I have no understanding of in a reply that clearly wasn't telling someone not to listen to what they want. I agree with your statement 100 per cent and will not argue it. The point of my rant was that people that want to denigrate an artist for whatever reason tend to justify their dislike of the artist or the artist's gimmick and cite the artists' "lack of talent." With that, I presented the idea that if talent were the deciding factor, a lot of people who use that argument could have it turned around on them.

I was looking at things in more of a sort of general level: Motown had songwriters and songs that were passed around to bands that all pretty much had the same backup band and similar vocal groups with a similar vocal arrangements. Black Sabbath leaned heavily into the Satanic lyrics and themes (and, for the record, I think they only had two #1 hits). The Beatles were gawked at and had a legion of teenage girls screaming for them at the time, and they sort of had a similar haircut/outfit arrangement with most of the British invasion bands. That they're remembered more than, say, Herman's Hermits or The Troggs is probably because of the consistently well-written songs... but I don't know if that was a factor of the time.

I'd argue popularity and radio appeal means almost nothing, but that's another argument for another time. On that note, Hendrix only had one #1 as well as The Grateful Dead, but I don't think anyone here would be using that to question whether or not they were good artists.

This is very subjective and debatable. My grandmother once had a TV morning show on and heard Demi Lovato and the first thing she said was "why is it that all these new singers just scream?" A lot of things vocally are subjective and all rely on one's tastes; however, again, if we're going to try using an objective standard of measure such as power, how many octaves they can sing, or how well-trained they are to navigate dynamics, a lot of singers we like for certain reasons would be just tossed aside. That was my point.

On that note, if we're talking about gimmicks and such, you brought up Miley Cyrus: you might like her vocals or her music, but for the uninitiated, she might just be the "Achy Breaky" guy's daughter. Or, for others, she might be more known for racy photo-shoots or sucking on blow-up dolls during her concerts. One could easily take the approach of others and dismiss her for that alone, but she obviously has the attention of others around here and has even worked with Metallica. I don't get that, but I'm not so blind to assume that she has no talent based on very little, and obviously she has the respect of a large number of people.

Sorry to go on for so long, but I feel like I needed to explain myself somewhat. I didn't think my response was that controversial nor unclear.

 

Why do you care so much if somebody says a singer is not talented? You yourself said that it is subjective yet you are the one that arguing about it. Black Sabbath had "only 2" #1? Jimi Hendrix had "only 1" #1? How many does Tove Lo have? How many octave does does Tove Lo have? Because Both Ariana and Demi have 4 octave voices if that is your measure of talent.

And Miley Cyrus is a reaaly good singer too.


I'd like too see Tove Lo sing like that. Like I said most popular pop singers are really good singers. You may not like the songs they are singing, but they are technically very good.

In my opinion Tove Lo isn't. Tove Lo can't hold a single note while singing live. If you don't believe me, listen to her singing live. She had only one hit, Talking Body. I think it is fair for people here to criticize her. That's my opinion.

And it is subjective. Some people will not like some singer. And it's okay.

If you don't like it, you don't need to comment about it.

 

Why is there walls of text about the Beatles and Miley Cyrus and all kinds of other shit in a thread about Tove Lo showing her tits? Does her musical talent have anything to do with how nice of a set of tits she has? Is this a board to view T&A or the deliberation venue for the recording academy?
