You are pretty close on that statement Azz.

Large Halibut do not taste as good as the smaller ones, that is for sure. As far as them tasting like Mud, I wouldn't go that far. Seems like any Halibut over 100 lbs starts tasting a little bit worse. Any Halibut under that is usually very good. But the best are the small ones under about 40 lbs or so.

The reason they don't tase good once getting that large is because they are obviously "bottom fish," and the halibut that weight over 100 lbs might be 40 years old or more, and sicne they've spent all that time at the bottom, they have very high levels of Mercury in their system.

Hence my statement about mud. thats what they are probably sifting through when at the bottom. I didn't think Mercuryis sucha huge problem up in the pristine waters of Alaska. But you might be right. Since the Bay is loaded with mercury the ones i have caught which varies between 5-40 pounds i started noticing that "taste" factor at a different size here than you probably would up in Alaska.

River my favorite fish to go for is Crappy, for their size on an ultra light pole is just awsome. For river fishing all i go for is trout. It sustains me for about 2 weeks out of the year when i go backpacking ultra light with just a fly pole and some rice.

I would love to go to Alaska to fly fish for salmon someday. Maybe next year. I was told they migrate in abundance on an even year.

So Azz, what's the largest Halibut that you caught? And where exactly did you fish for them?

What you are about to hear is top secret, and must not be repeated.

Everyone knows Carp are the greatest freshwater fish, Sea Bass the best sea water fish, followed closely by Cod or Mullet and Salmon the best game fish.

And Flounder if you're in an estuary.

    3, 2, 1 you're back in the room.

SF bay area. The largest one i ever caught was around 22 pounds. But my friends have caught way larger and thats why i came to the conclusion i did about their taste. The largest one a buddy of mine caught was around 60 pounds. His scale tops out at 60 so it was hard to say how accurate it was.

Damn, no wonder it had such a bad taste. I wouldn't touch anything I caught out of that bay with a 10 foot pole. Being bottom dwellers and all, they are probably eating all kinds of shit at the bottom of the bay. :?

So how is everyone doing today?
