Bug-bomb blast sends 5 to hospitals

Overaggressive use of bug bombs combined with an open gas pilot caused a late-morning explosion on the city's northside that sent five people to area hospitals Thursday.
Tenants in 1103 Lehman St. were setting off bug bombs when the vapors were ignited by the pilot light on a gas stove at 10:17 a.m., said Mayor Trish Ward.

Three tenants were hurt in the blast. Dennis Morgan and Karen Light, who lived on the second floor, were taken to Hershey Medical Center, city fire Commissioner Barry Fisher said. Initial reports indicated they had been blown off a second-floor balcony.

"What we're hearing now is they were blown out from inside (the home)," Fisher said.

Light was listed in fair condition last night, and Morgan was either treated and released or never admitted to the hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
A first-floor tenant, Timothy Balsbaugh, was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital and released. Two firefighters were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital as a precaution after inhaling the bug spray, Fisher said.

Firefighters found 17 bug bombs on the second floor, a dozen on the first floor and two in the basement, said David Eggert, city housing inspector. All of the bug bombs had been used, he said.

One can is supposed to be used for each 25-square-foot area to rid the building of roaches and bed bugs, Fisher said.

"I was supposed to be bug bombing the place" for landlord John Light, Balsbaugh said.

He said he gave some bug bombs to Morgan to use upstairs.
Balsbaugh said he was on the first floor when the explosion happened.

"I was doing a walk-through to make sure everything was turned off," he said when he heard the blast.

The explosion knocked out an exterior wall overlooking the balcony in the apartment shared by Morgan and Light.

"We're all lucky," Balsbaugh said hours after the blast. "It's lucky nobody got killed."

A woman who lives a block away on North 12th Street said she "heard a boom," and came to see what happened, along with dozens of other neighborhood residents.

John Light said seven people lived in the three-unit apartment house.

Tom Meyer said he and his sister and father - the first-floor tenants for almost two years - were sitting outside when the explosion happened. They weren't injured, but they were shaken.

"I never seen anything like this, except in movies," Meyer said, "and I'm almost 62 years old. ... All I seen was smoke. It happened so fast."

Bricks were strewn along a walkway between 1103 and 1105 Lehman St., as was debris from the balcony.

"She's lucky she wasn't killed," Meyer said.

Eggert said the city's public safety office had been working with John Light for code violations at the home for a roach infestation. Even after the explosion, the house still had roaches, Eggert said.

"These bug bombs are pretty powerful stuff," Ward said, adding that the instructions for the bombs say that only one should be used in a room.

"Our fire people recovered six in one room," Ward said.

Lehman Street was blocked between 10th and 12th streets for several hours. The county's Haz-Mat team was called in to make sure the building was safe.
