I was about to go and have a quiet rest. I then clicked on a Kate Beckinsale video. Tissues were needed, it was good.

Beer is good also. Good evening/morning/afternoon my friends.

Yeah, I can see where you all would. The same applies to us being almost used to 95F and 100% humidity down here. It sucks ass but you get used to it.

Afternoon Keiks, you're up early aren't you?

Salty, bama; good to see you guys.

Salty, yeah it was the Ferguson one. I was out of ammo by the one minute mark :D I hope to see HQ caps soon as well.

Bama; it's 1.40am here. It's a 4 day weekend so just home from the pub/train, checking out here and going to bed. Had a rough week, need some sleep.

I'll see you guys later, take care.

Not if you live in a standard house. (I.E. foundation/frost wall) But the people in the trailers......excuse me......mobile homes (lol) have issues from November, till April.

We just pour cement footing here then cinder blocks on top of the footing and fill in with cement. We only have a couple of weeks a year where the weather gets well below freezing, we leave our water dripping during those days. I could see where the mobile homes would have huge issues, everything is exposed, I don't count underpinning as any kind of protection.

No...it isn't. Not up here anyway. They wrap em' in what we call skirting, but the wind/cold slides right through. I can't imagine living in one up here. Especially this year with the oil prices. Those damn things have next to nothing for insulation, or worthy windows.

Do houses use gas tanks for heat? We all have central heat/air except for the people in mobile homes and they mostly have propaine tanks.

Wood, and No.2 heating oil are the number one choices. Some people use propane, (but mostly for clothes dryers, or kitchen ranges) or electricity.
Natural gas is starting to work it's way in, but as of now it's still mostly for commercial users.

I have an electric heat pump in mine. I used to use natural gas but the newer units are so efficent with electricity now it's much cheaper to heat with electricity. My gas and power bills have almost cut in half since I put in my new unit it. I still use natural gas for the water heater and I have a gas starter in my fireplace, but that only stays on for few minutes.

They're starting to push the heat pumps up here now as well. We've got a local company that just won a big patent for some new design. Supposed to be excellent new tech I guess. We use oil fired hot water baseboard here.

Because of the oil prices and environmental issues the electrical engineers were doing all they could to produce a efficient means of replacing the need for gas to heat. So far, using mine as an example, they've done a pretty good job.

The university up here in Orono is apparently doing bigtime research in the use of geothermal heat pumps. Sounds great in theory, but not in this neck of the woods. lol That's something you guys should look into down there. The install is a fiscal nightmare I guess, but they apparently pay for themselves pretty quickly in warmer areas where they can work efficiently.

Heat pumps get less efficient the colder it is; until recently they weren't an option in Maine at all, but some of the newer ones (and the rising cost of oil) are changing that.

When I was up there we used oil for the central, with a couple wood stoves to supplement it.

EDIT: Same as Salty, oil-fired hot water baseboards.

EDIT: had I looked at your avatar area, I would have seen Fairfax. Damn beer sponge gets the best of me again
