    Historically. The Catholic Church sent out sealed orders across Europe, and on a Friday the 13th, they were to be opened.

    Thus, the Templars could be slaughtered in a co-ordinated attack across Europe at the same time, which wouldn't allow the Templars to rally.

    Plus, the Catholic Church got all their treasure too. ;)
