    1. Original at reduced resolution; when working, however, use highest resolution (or even upsample) to retain maximum amount of details.
    3. With red material, extract more information from the the green plane instead as flesh tones mostly reside there. Separate RGB planes and then recombine with red and green planes swapped.
    5. Multiply the resulting image twice to reveal hidden gray shades.
    7. Convert to green image to gray shades. Save that image.
    9. With original image, get the highest red, green or blue component per pixel and display as gray shades. Save the gray shades; these will be the desired L (Lightness) component in the HLS (Hue-Saturation-Lightness) model.
    11. Blend both gray shades. Try to keep all midtones (gamma) yet retain as much contrast as possible. Experiment with contrast enhancement and curves on both gray shade images until satisfied. With original image, tweak hue and saturation, then remap color components, Hue and Saturation, with gray shades, Lightness, that you saved.
    Save every variation; many times you will want to rollback to a previous version or recombine an old version with another variant.

    I use two technics for xray in GIMP:
    1. for test a quick method:
    - duplicate source picture
    - duplicated picture type set to multiply (if top is light) or screen (if top is dark) mode
    - duplicate many times this (second) layer
    If you see anything (ex. nipples), then will good source for xray.

    2. If picture is good source, then I use this (see it on youtube):
    - open source pic
    - select xrayable area with (I use Scissors select tool)
    - add a new transparent layer, set to Overlay mode
    - click to transparent layer and fill selection with black or white (dark area with with, light area with black)
    - duplicate this filled layer
    - select Color Picker Tool and click on source layer
    - pick body color from neck or face
    - select Bucket Fill Tool
    - click on top layer and fill selection with new body color
    - play with Colors -> Brightness-Contrast
    - Use other tools and tricks for better goal. What I use yet: duplicate source layer, and add Alpha channel, and delete outside of selection. Select cutted part and play with contrast or light, layer types. I use this layer under colored layers.

    That's it, just play with parameters. :)

    I'm just an untrained hacker. I use Photoshop. Start with the lasso tool to outline the desired area for adjustment, and then play with HDR, exposure, contrast, colors, saturation, noise reduction, etc. Just go round and round, back and forth, adjusting by eye until it's as good as I can get. No set pattern or sequence. Several posters here are more sophisticated than I am, and can offer more advanced tips or resources.
