Sorry I don't really understand what you are trying to ask. I create a layer after I have selected a region that needs separate colorization or shading (clothing, breasts, nipple area, etc). Did you read through my tutorial? If not, check it out and hopefully it will help explain what I do better. The link is below in my signature.

 

I think what he's doing is, making a layer by copy of one area. Then after working on that layer, selecting another area, but since that layer only has the area he just worked on covered, it says empty area. He needs to go back to the original layer each time he wants to select another area to copy.

 

You may be right MM. You definitely have to pay attention to what layer is selected (in the lower right-hand window) or you either will have nothing to paste after a copy, or you won't be pasting the right thing.

I proposed making a X-ray tutorial area to a couple of the moderators for the people that want to learn how each of us do our thing, but nothing has come of it so far. I think it would be fun to assign tasks (pictures), and help them learn how to do what we do by walking them through it step-by-step.

 

All i know about photoshop x-rays is via your tutorial!!

Yep, as Mollymutt suggested, you're trying to copy that area from a layer where no image data exists. In your example, make sure you click on layer 1, and then try the copy & paste. I usually will try to do both sides (nipple area, breasts) when I do mine just so I don't have too many layers to sort through. You can do multiple selects by holding down the 'Shift' key to add to your selection, or the 'Alt' key to remove portions without affecting the rest of the selection. This is handy when doing complex shapes, like refining the edge of the clothing or tracing body parts.

P.S. - you may want to try feathering the selection area before copying & pasting into it's own layer. This really helps make it look less "applied" and more natural, especially when doing the nipple areas. The number of pixels to feather depends on the size of the picture, but 1-5 is usually plenty. If you're not sure just try a number, then paste it and see how it looks - if it's too fuzzy, then undo a couple steps, reduce the number and try again. If it looks too sharp edged, then back up and just increase the number some more.

Not a bad attempt billy - here's a quicky I did of just the torso in the various stages. First is the original, followed by my "evaluation" layer which I bring up the brightness & contrast (often after desaturating) so I know where things are located. The base skintone layer isn't usually made from the evaluation layer, but another copy of the clothing layer which I then colorize to match the medium to darker areas. From there I will then get my outlines of the areolas, and the breasts (from the evaluation layer), and copy them from the skintone layer. From there, I'll start using the dodge tool to lighten up the breasts and other areas to match the differences in the skintone on the different layers, and burn in shadowing as required as well. The nipples (saved from the skintone layer) then just need to be tweaked a bit - in this case more contrast & brightness, less saturation, and a little more reddish hue till it looks correct to me.

I think you used a little too much feathering on the nipple area (I used 1 pixel), and didn't find the nipple on the right correctly. If you play around with the brightness/contrast, as well as the hue/saturation/lightness more you can get the skintones to match a little closer as well.
