By the way, what is the pronunciation, of leaving and living? I usually use just leaving, never remember to use living, and I'm not really sure how to pronounce living.

 

Also since we are at it, how about Covert? My brother in law is always clueless when I use that word, even know we watch Covert Affairs all the time.

Leaving is pronounced LEE ving.

Living is pronounced with a soft I, like ih. There's no equivalent to it in Latin languages where I is universally pronounced as a hard vowel; ee.

In English the i sound in living rhymes with mist or in or did.

Covert means hidden or veiled.

 

but how do you pronounce covert? He seems to pronounce in a long sounding, like when he mispronounce the name of a friend which name is Marcia. Marcia in Brasil is pronounced quickly and not long like he does. I never for once see he pronouncing the right way.

 

Co as in no. Vert more or less rhymes with the Spanish word muerta, sans the a. Co-vert. 2 quick syllables. Best I can explain.

That sounds the way he pronounces it. However he do more like co-v e r t. Just like Marcia He pronounces it Mar - (c i -a), not just him, every American around him with different accents pronounces the same way. In Portuguese is just two quick syllables.

You an American right? If you are you probable pronounce Marcia just like him, which would be long like covert. I can pronounce the way he do Marcia, but covert is kind of hard.

EDIT: I just thought about it, Marica in Portuguese is as quick as when you pronounce Marcus.
