RS Password Etiquette

Lets continue our convo in the mod forum. It is apparent that this is a policy issue now should be discussed in private. As to loomy101 i will get on it.

Hey guys...this isnt battle of the mods here...but if I can give a few propositions.

1) How about implementing that people who password protect their files MUST post the password on their thread sometime before the thread is closed if they dont want to get pmed...lurkers will still be able to get it afterwards, but at least contributors will to. Theres no need to not take advantage of links that are alive.

2) Another suggestion...a request for pswd/reup section/thread...of course only contributors could request (and would get their requests satisfied anyway...).

3) Yet another suggestion...Its happened a couple times that reups were posted, except both the original and the reup post were YSI. How bout a rule saying reups HAVE to be an eternal link. I personally have bandwidth issues, and sometimes have to miss both links because my bandwidth was too high at both times. Its also logical that posts that have sufficient demand for reposts should be posted in order for all this demand to get satisfied....simple YSI's sometimes arent enough to satisfy this demand (think "Outnumbered 3" thread).

if anyone needs to do a post with pw for any reason, let him do - but you´ll never get rid of being pmed for pw.

imho: i have a deep understanding for holding back links with short ttl (but: why use such hosts?), but for all other threads - no pw at all -> less work for posters (checking pm´s, checking contribs, sending links, keeping an eye on their links working), less work for mods (no checking of post like "... pm´ed me" etc.), less posts/replies (asking for links/pw) in general

 

Everyone's made very valid points. i might as well add my 2 cents:

yes, the forum was designed to encourage sharing, but the way i see it, if every single last video was up for grabs to anyone who knows how to register an account, there would be less and less incentive for noobs to actually contribute on their own. we'd have a specific group of hardcore contributors and a much more substantial group of leechers who do nothing but bog down RS or FF servers w/ incessant downloading. i personally like YSI because i can actually share links w/ those who i know have shared as well, thus keeping the sharing mission statement of the forum alive and well. additionally, fewer members who receive links will usually translate into faster download times as well considering the lighter server congestion. considering it takes me 2+ hours on average for each video contribution (including time to capture screens and upload them to an imagehost, etc.), it'd be nice to know that the links would go to those who also know of the hard work and effort to share vids. i'll get off my soapbox now.

but imo: password protected RS threads are the best form of vid posting
links cant die and only ppl get it who deserve it!!
why should i upload a big file or even a whole movie like alot of ppl use to and share it even with all the leechers...thats stupid
sharing keeps the vid vault alive
if ppl allow every1 to dl their vids there would be an amount of vid threads less!
so all in all: stick to the current rules sircum and tommy!! contributors stay contributors and leechers become one of them or they can watch the samples, trailers or screenshots :>

Is it possible to have a thread unlocked, so that the original poster who missed the opportunity to post the password/ last link to a Rapidshare link, could do so after the fact? After 13 days, it seems as though the password/link might as well be posted to everyone, so the links don't go completely to waste after the contributors/ Big Dogs have had their fill. Please advise at your earliest convenience.... -vb

 

I would dissagree with you that a picture poster is not as good as a vid poster. A vid poster can upload a vid and wait for it to be done while doing other things. But the whole point is why differentiate between a vid poster and a picture poster? Aren't we all members of the same forum? And if all the picture posters were to password their content how many vid posters would gripe about it? Regardless to say by passwording a file you are not sharing. By definition it is trading.


Now as far as your Rapidshare server and taking up resources that is not correct. If you lookat your premium account they have an incentive program for you to get as many people to download your file as possible. By passwording your file you basically limit the number of downloads and justtake up their hard drive space.

 

The ONLY reason that I have started to PW any of my files is the sharing of files from board to board not member to member. I have looked at several other boards and it is interesting how quickly my (our) threads make it onto other boards. I looked at a small video I posted about a month ago and it actually was posted on another board 1hr 10min later under a differernt name, but exactly the same words, pics, RS thread link etc....

I know this is not the whole answer to the problem (if it is one really), but I just feel that our member should get the first opportunity to D/L any videos (or pictures) that they like. I feel no loyalty to other boards and have some level of pride in the quality and quantity of videos and pictures that I post here.

I agree about putting pws on some RS files. When I came accross this forum I was just browsing, but when I saw vids that I wanted I realised that I had to share. I haven't been a member for long but have posted both vids and pics, adding to the forum. So I am a converted leecher And am sure many other members are the same as me
