Yet you feel you're educated enough on the subject to claim she's in it for the attention?

    Color me confused.

This is relevant. Gaga is irrelevant b/c of her crap album. Applause is a crap lead song. If miley follows she will be irrelevant by june of this year.

Have not ver'fd this info but seems likely due to this poster's past verocity. In other words I believe what he says.

    Gaga Miley, gone by 2015.

I'm sorry, were you expecting a more thoughtful, articulate response to your useless post?

I'd do the bottom half, after a bottle of hard-liquor. Leave the top at home.

As to this matter about her talent. Public opinion doesn't determine anything. Least of all the skill of an artist. And I'll be the first to admit that skill in reference to art is extremely subjective, but only to a degree. And that degree rests firmly in the vast middle ground between dip-shit talentless tools that number in the millions and the, you know, the once in a generation Mozart.

If public opinion was an infallible determinate of skill, than advertising would be a lost cause. This is assuming that people listen to the sort of music which they think is "good" and that "good" music is a subjective interpretation of what the individual considers to be the product of a talented artist.

So what I'm basically saying is that the vast majority of people have very poor taste in music and therefore can not be relied on to recognize talent. Except when that very rare Mozart figure comes along.

But, working with the vast middle ground, the entire industry of advertising rests on the understanding that people are impressionable, gullible and manipulable. They can take the most mediocre bull shit and impress upon an audience of millions the idea that that given product or service is going to transform their life. And it works.

Then, past a certain point, people become very defensive about their choices. No one wants to admit that they've been fooled. So they'll consciously argue in favor of a product, which they know is an absolute disappointment, just to save face. This happens far more frequently in politics and religion than in music, but it does happen. It's entirely a question of how much of their lives they've devoted to the belief.

But, I'm optimist, I like to think that the thousands of people who attend these concerts don't go because they sincerely enjoy the music, but because most of them want to take hi-res pictures of Miley Cyrus' snatch for us all to enjoy.

I don't think that's true at all. You'd have to be deaf not to recognize real talent when you heard it, and I've known a few deaf people who not even that applies to.

The vast majority of people have poor taste in pop music, but given the choices, that's not really saying all that much. Like any other cheaply produced and heavily marketed commodity, pop music is formulated/designed/contrived/ to have mass appeal. It doesn't have to be delicious, it just has to be palatable and not leave a sour aftertaste. Pop music is a McDonald's franchise. Pop musicians are in it for the money, the fame, the fun of it. The smart ones make a couple hundred million $$$ for their time and then ride off into the sunset. The desperate ones hang on forever and ever, hoping to remain "legitimate" because they are hopeless attention whores.

Regardless, pop music isn't about talent or creativity, it's about formula and function and finance. It's about mass production. It's about Toyota vs Ford vs GM vs Volkswagen vs Kia, ad infinitum... Or in other words, it's about mass appeal, and that's all it's about. Names come and go, the players are interchangeable, but the mission remains the same for the corporate entities that fill their coffers off the public demand for finger snapping music that helps get them through their days.

Miley, Katy, Justin, Bieber, Gaga... They are all just franchises feeding off your patronage. Some may be better than others, everyone has their preferences, but in pop music, that's what it comes down to. McPopstars.

McPopstars would be a better name for American Idol.

I think this is the real Miley and Hannah Montana was the act. I have to say Wrecking Ball was a great video, very bold and artistic. As much as I like Shakira her latest video with Rihanna makes me want to weep. It looks like a Babe Station session and I expect them to start waving a phone at you in the hope you'll ring in and talk dirty to them for £3 a minute. Miley's follow up was the laying in bed and pretend your whacking off cliché, very boring.

I have to applaud her, this is her first grown up stuff and she's literally put everything out there, most wait until their record sales drop and they're desperate for some attention. All that's left is for her leotard to snap when she's bending over and Phun will crash.
