  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

I've set up automatic promotions so that we shouldn't need to do this manually anymore. When a user reaches the next post count level they should be automatically moved to the appropriate group within the next hour or two (it happens in timed batches rather than immediately).

If you do notice any that didn't get upgraded—perhaps users that reached the post count before this was implemented—please continue to let us know here.

This doesn't apply to the 100,000 group. They'll still need an admin to set their color for them.

For the search it doesn't matter if it's Chloë Grace Moretz or Chloe Grace Moretz. If i would search with Chloë Grace Moretz then the treads with Chloe Grace Moretz so up and other way around it's the same

True. but it is against the rules .
Plus some people might just search for "Chloe" and I don't think it would work if you do.

In the case of Chloe of Chloë it doesn't matter for search, both times the threads are found. One thing that doesn't work in search are new threads. If i would post a thread of Jessica Alba now and search it over 5 min, then it's not found

You searched for "Chloe" when it was still "Chloë" and it showed up?

Somehow it doesn't matter when you search with "Chloe" or with "Chloë"

Our policy regarding the use of accents, diacritics, etc., was written before we got the Sphinx-based search add-on! It wasn't acquired to address this issue, hence it's never been tested, but it looks as though it's more sophisticated in this regard than the vBulletin system! Perhaps we need to do some testing and review our rules? :)

Remember the last time we shut the forum off for some maintenance? We had all (or almost all) of our database tables converted to a utf8 character set and collation so they matched. Anyway, if this didn't work before, I wouldn't be surprised if changing the collations to utf8 is what fixed it.

Given the example that CAI quotes above, we established our policy on diacritics at the time when the system would find instances of Chloë (with umlaut) if that is what was specified, or it would find instances of Chloe (without umlaut) if that was specified, but it would not find both together regardless of which was specified. Now it seems it can, although perhaps we need to establish the extent of this change.

This sounds to me more like the result of a more intelligent searching system than the outcome of converting the database to a utf8 character set, GB, but you may be right.

Either way, it looks as though we need to review the policy.

This is what database collations do which is what made me think of it. They define rules for comparing individual characters of the character set. So, the character is a list of symbols along with an encoding (representative number). The collation would then determine things like if "a" comes before "b" or that "A" is the uppercase version of "a". It also allows you to tell that "ë" is a variation of "e".

Sphinx should be able to do either case/accent sensitive or insensitive searching depending on how it's configured. But, ultimately it has talk to MySQL which has to know how to tell one character from another properly. So, if this is something that started working recently, I'd bet that's why. It's certainly a closely related topic.

But, yeah, if it's working in the desired way, then it doesn't really matter why.

For the record, I've never seen threads with diacritics in the title show up in a search (regardless of what's in the search query). In the past, as recent as last week, I've searched Chloë Grace Moretz, Chloe Grace Moretz, Moretz, Chloë Moretz, Chloe Moretz and the thread with "Chloë" didn't show up in any of the results.

CAI brought up the same thing a little while back:

Hey GB, did a search for both "qzqze" & "qzqzë" and your thread didn't show up in either search for me.

Right. So the conclusion, what I was checking, is that when using an accented character in your search string it gets treated as the unaccented equivalent. But, the reverse isn't true. And, no matter which search string you use, the accented version does not show up in searches.

I don't think anything has actually changed then, has it? And the rule of always using the unaccented character is still a good idea.

Correct. Hence why I reported it, as usual. Not sure what CAI was talking about, titles with diacritics have never shown up in searches.
