Those that are aggravated would do well to realize that their understanding is incorrect and educate themselves, rather than lashing out at more marginalized members of society than themselves, which is never a good look.

 

As a mod I'm obligated to read through these threads and act as a referee if necessary. Sometimes it's amusing and other times just baffling. If I had opened this thread shortly after it was posted I likely would have sent it to the trash can based on the silly pics in the OP, but since it gained legs I figure I'll leave it be. It's really not in my purview to regulate what members discuss as long as the discussion is overall benign, regardless of whether or not I think it's worthwhile.

I can, however, move this thread to Celeb Extra where long winded discussion threads belong.

what does she know? probably nothing, but that is not the point, the idea is to use what you know to help people. Activism... you know.

And you know what, exactly, about Emma Watson's approach to feminism that makes this claim relevant to attacking her for reposting a quote Alan Rickman had given elsewhere, and which she admired?

She's been quite publicly vocal about feminism and its meaning, and as far as she's concerned, it's all about nothing more and nothing less than treating women with respect and dignity equal to men, giving women opportunities and pay equal to men. And she's as much about empowering men to part of that process as women.

So there's absolutely nothing to your criticism, even if it were valid -- and I don't grant that it is -- which has to do with the topic.

 

You are missing the point. The feminist movement or whatever term it is using has been hijacked in the US, and to a lesser extent in other nations, by a bunch of radical nut jobs that have tainted the entire movement. In the same way that a some members of a soccer team being discovered using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs, it taints the entire team - even those that had nothing to do with the doping. It's guilt by association and Emma Watson is caught up in that.

When she comes out and makes a public statement about feminism regarding a recently deceased individual, people aren't going to cut her any slack because she's cute. No one is saying Emma personally deserves it, but for her not to expect backlash when she's injected herself in the middle of a contentious debate is naive.

 

I'm not missing the point, you're misrepresenting the situation. Feminism means what it means, and always has, and what it means and has meant is that women are entitled to equal treatment, equal respect and equal dignity with men. That's the whole thing.

All the rest is crap used by those who would deny women their rightful place as equals to try to obfuscate the ugliness of their position and actions.

You're arguing about what she has to say, without actually thinking about what she has to say. Her and Alan Rickman.

You think it's distasteful that Rickman supported feminist causes and that Emma Watson quoted him on it on his death? Knowing him as the man he was, I'm fairly certain he'd tell you to go fuck yourself, from the grave. I know I would, and I'm only one generation short of his age, me being 53. My parents are 20 years older than he was, in their 90's now, and they taught me to think freely as I grew up. If you have a problem with free thinking, then there is something definitely wrong with you.

People on the internet quibble over the most dumbass shit. They don't even think about what they're saying, they just throw it out there like their opinion is important.

At no time did I say I did know about Emma Watson's approach to feminism, as was extremely clear (intentionally) from what I said :| Since the conversation in this thread has seemingly grown to include feminism generally, as well as Ms. Watson's opinions, I don't think I'm out of line in making a short statement accordingly. However, if this is a private thread in which I am not welcome, then I offer my apologies.

 

Not at all. There are many sub-sets in the feminism movement, each with its own ideas of what the cause should represent. Some of those sects have no interest in equality, but rather promote a female superiority/male inferiority agenda. The internet/social media has given a platform to those extreme groups to spread their ideas of feminism and that has stirred up a backlash with others that reject those views.

When Emma Watson puts herself out there as a public figure she's stepping into the firestorm created by extremists on both sides. That's where the hate is coming from. Her actual views don't matter to either extreme, she simply becomes a tangible face for people to go after. The Alan Rickman quote is just another prop for people to get offended by - those involved in the vitriol care even less about Rickman's views than they do Emma's.

What feminism is supposed to represent won't matter one bit until the anger dies down and the extreme views are marginalized. That certainly isn't the case now.
