I have a question for all of the talented sig makes here.
If I want to add pictures onto a background am I supposed to cut out the pictures and then cut and paste? I mean is that the easiest way?

 

I never cut period. I my combine 2 pics together, but I then always use the backround in the pics. Sometimes I may change the color or saturation, brightness, to get to get it to my liking. Cutting almost always leads to a sig with unrefined edges.

 

I never cut either. I use the eraser tool.

like most techniques in all forms of art/design, cutting has it's place but it's not always suitable. i don't find any problem cutting for sigs because they're so small. i usually work from high res pictures so i design the whole sig at something like 4500x1500, then reduce it to 10% for the sig (which isn't a fail safe plan, it could cause problems with certain designs), which basically means every 10 pixels vertically or horizontally are being reduced to 1 pixel in the final design, so if you're cuts aren't perfectly clean it won't show, and when photoshop resamples the image it leaves a fairly soft clean edge. the picture of karen in my current sig was cut quickly and roughly at full res (about 2000px wide) but at sig size it looks great. another good way to cut large simple edges (but not fine detail) is use an eraser with about 90% hardness, hold shift and click your way down the edge. but as you can see from what toolz said, people have different methods, and no one's right or wrong

edit: you can also try making your selection then feathering it by a pixel or two but it's hit and miss, i'd say about 10% of cuts i try feathering actually work. helps when working with hair though, but not so much skin, unless it's a soft focus picture and the hard edge stands out

I know alot of folks work with their sig at a much larger size and then scale it down but i never like to do that. I think Jay said that he loses interest if a sig takes more than five minutes. I feel kind of similar. I don't have the patience for the amount of skill Toolz, Bio, TCF and Innu (to name a few) can utilise in their sigs.

I kight try harder if i had a better version of p/shop but until then I LAZY BUGGER!
