the biggest pain doing this was adding shadow to her shoulder, cos in the original you can see below, her shoulder has a lot of light on it but i needed shadow from the text and i couldn't just paint it out cos of the tattoos, so i had to duplicate the upper section of her arm and enlarge it, then put it over her shoulder and reshape it to fit the actual size of her arm/shoulder. took me ages to work out the best way of doing it, but it worked pretty good, difficult to tell.

i very rarely leave saturation untouched, and obviously adding layer effects, gradient maps etc will always require saturation tweaks, i guess at the moment i'm just in the habit of draining colour more than adding any more. i think i probably do it too much sometimes, always under the impression that something looks too bright, so i take more and more colour out, then sometimes look at it later and wonder why i took so much out when it's bordering on black and white!

merging the text into the image was the idea behind the whole thing. i've been watching a lot of videos recently on youtube by a guy called Andrei Oprinca (http://www.youtube.com/user/diphax) and he's really good at compositing objects/people into different scenes, and the way he can take 2 images that share very little qualities and manipulate the colours and the lighting/shadows is amazing so it's something i've been working at improving. if i ever wanted to put say a car into a scene, i'd spend ages looking for the 'right' car, that was lit right for the scene and didn't have too many shadows/highlights where i didn't want them etc where as he shows how to overcome any of these problems and be able to use any picture you want. definitely worth a watch, nice guy as well, i think he's spanish but does all his tutorials in english. he knows his stuff to say the least. if you visit his PSD Box website he's got different levels of tutorial, for beginners to more experienced users, i genuinely believe EVERYONE could get something out of them, and they're free. he does have a premium section as well but a LOT of free stuff.

A splatter and a grunge brush I think. I was going to edge out the image and make it look aged but I can't find brushes suitable. So I'll have another look tomorrow.

 

Ah, that looks a lot like the burned paper brush from obsidian dawn over the #14 grunge with a grid pattern.

did you try a dynamic turn on the grunge brush to get away from the vertical pixelation? Was the source portrait rather lq? or did you degrade it on purpose to tie it in with the background
