Must have some uniformity reason. We belong to the same herd. I have seen documentaries on both amish and menonites but amish almost seem futuristic if you compare them side by side. Still there is something likeable about them. How they toil away and seem at peace with their less is more lifestyle.

 

Agreed, the Amish are the ultimate old school.

 

I remember one part where a amish family had been allowed to use a cell phone as it helped them in their buisness. Only the man in the family were allowed to use it during work and never around other members. He told the filmmakers he had discovered the music of country as a result. Too him it was a divine experience hearing something that pretty.

 

There was a group of Mennonite ladies that used to come to the local farmer's market every Saturday. Their baked stuff was fantastic so I was a regular customer.
They were really friendly, and would call me by name since I went by there quite a bit. I have several tattoos, and I showed up one day wearing a sleeveless t shirt.
It clearly made them uncomfortable I didn't do it again, out of respect for their culture, but I remember thinking that it was odd. Like their opinion of me changed

 

Good morning. Been out on my morning walk. Rather wintry outside as far as temp and air is conserned. The mallards are arguing as always. I think i past 3 scotsmen. Scotsmen is a nickname here for scottish terrier.

 

Did they tolerate you using modern tools when you worked?

Maybe their clocks stopped in the 17th/18th Century with regards to technology?

 

I read a bit on wiki about it and it seems it is case that they are worried about letting the outside in and the interference it brings with. The interesting thing is that if i were a documentary filmmaker that are welcome into a community its fine for me to use cameras and microphones but the community are not to use it. There are of course various levels of strictness depending on where you are and in what community you live in. I read that electronic wheelchairs are allowed in cases where a family member needs a medical assistance aswell as any additional service they may need to a home. But these decisions must be made by a council of elders so a bit of a jehovas witness warning there. While they cant own cars themselves they can rent a car and have someone drive them if they need to travel to a different community far away. Again as long as we dont own or use it its fine. But a common trait for most of them is that their church is of limits no matter how progressive they are.

Again this is based on amish and wiki related material it may be wrong and it doesnt apply to the mennonites even if there are similairities.

 

Sadly I've never been able to personally meet any Amish or Mennonites.

But i'd like to.

My only real reference was Harrison Ford in "Witness" & years back some Doc series about Amish 20 Something girl spending a month with a family on the "Outside"
and thinking how hot she was.

I don't think they're look out of place in the 18th Century and from what i know i'd admire that sense of community and things like barn rising, and helping each other.

However i can guess, but don't know their attitude to sexuality, but i can guess when it doesn't confirm to their "Norms"?
