I have used a Canon EOS 400D for about 2 years now. I´m still not all happy with the digital. Before i had a Pentax SF7 and sometimes i think that analog is better when using a good film quality.

Don't know much about it but I can say the quality of Riv's pics are far superior to my digital camera which is a Nikon 5.1 megapixel.

    Yes, they are great !
It is not so much the camera but very often a fine lens does a lot for getting better pics.

i chose the D40 intentionally (6,1mp). first it was a bargain (phase-out-model), second it´s not all about mega-pixel. quite often the more mp you have the worse the pics are - more mp means smaller sensors = less light.

and i still haven´t found a reasonably priced digital SLR that can top my Nikon F801s (aka 8008s)/Kodak ektar100 - combo (for slides it´s the ektachrome 100)

why is that? I would tend to think that the technology would be greater just like computers - this isn't the case with cameras?

Here i can`t get a full sized sensor digital camera under 2500.- euros and that is a little too much for a hobby photographer as i am.
Would be nice to try out sometime and see the difference.

well, i´ll try. would be easier in german ;)

the size of the CCD, especially in compact cameras, is limited. so the more megapixel, the smaller the pixel. means less light-sensitive. also noise etc. is increasing.

pixel increase from left to right. the best part is ~6mp.

some additional terms: chromatic aberration, diffraction, processing of mass of data.

in short: if you want megapixel you need the tools to serve them. lenses, electronics, chips.

a computer with lots of GHz but without RAM, HD... well.
a muscle car without tires... well.

I may be wrong but i think with a great turntable and a LP you get a much better sound than with a CD-player. Ok, as River said, the rest has to be good too.... speakers and so on

I don't know - I just see the world of computers and automatically inserted all electronics when I shouldn't have. I just would have thought with new you always have better and that's not the case.

lol @ the Sigma... into your neighbours bedroom-window? ;)

just to avoid too much technical hijacking (it´s about nature lovers ;)) - i always find it quite useful to set the camera on highest available pic-size and downsize the pic on the computer. i usually take the pictures in 3000px and save them as 2000px. no filters, no photoshopping, just downsizing. looks much more crispier.
