  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

I was interested in Portfoleyo's "Signature Rules" thread (below) and was going to add my :2cent: when I noticed the thread had been locked! For heaven's sake, it was only started yesterday, and lasted 4 minutes (!) - is this the heavy hand of the censor? ;) My own thread, merely three below it, must certainly be considered "time-expired" two days after I posted it, but it's still hanging there!

I was going to make the observation that the physical pixel dimensions of a signature image must be totally irrelevant to the servers handling it - they are more sensitive to the file size involved, and bandwidth used. For example, in the locked thread that I'm referring to, littleinuk's sig takes up a mere 18.7KB, whereas the GIF sig Portfoleyo is using there, while presenting a smaller image on screen, actually comprises 1.98MB, a file size over 100 times bigger! Examples abound on the forum of this sort of disparity, and I wonder at the relevance of the current rules? Are we talking aesthetics here?

If it's server loading that's the concern, then the sig rule should reflect that - perhaps it should say something like, "The signature may be any shape, size or type within reason (mods' discretion) so long as it doesn't exceed (say) 100KB."

i think it's the actual size on the screen that we are worried about, not necessarily the file size. when it's too high, it's very distracting :2cent:

S, I'll get your first gripe out of the way. I locked the thread you're referring to because it was a basic question that was answered, we often lock a thread once the issue is cleared up, if it was a debate or something that's more complex, such as this thread then we'd leave it open for discussion.

To sum it up, TKA effectively did it for me. Big signatures are difficult on the eye and really annoying, especially if it means you have to scroll across your screen or down further to see the next post. We aren't really strict on the size limit rule, we can be lenient if it's a minor breach but some are way too big to ignore, and we send the PM accordingly.

The thing is, one look at a sig and you know if it's too big or not. To click on the pic and check the properties is too much effort, and we don't have a problem with the GIF sigs, some of them are really popular and even though they might be large in file size, it isn't usually a distraction for most.

If it's an issue with it slowing up your system, you can always disable the signature option, so you don't have to worry about slow loading big GIF sigs.

Thanks Kieks, as you might have gathered I'm a bit prejuduced against GIF sigs which I find very distracting, especially once the novelty's worn off! I wonder what other people think? And I genuinely believed that the underlying reason for limiting sig sizes was a server loading issue.

And if Caruso says "F*** You" to me again, I'll smash his bloody face in! :D

Your sig is great, TK, as far as GIF sigs, go, and brings a smile to my face whenever I watch it. But it's the constant flickering away in the periphery of one's vision when it and other GIFs are on screen that I find irritating and distracting. Nothing against yours in particular! :D

I just recently started going to a resident evil forum and there is no sig limit. one guy has a sig about 1200wide by 500 high.

it drives me nuts there and it would do so here too.

I like the sigs, but wouldn't want to see them any bigger.

On the one hand I like .gif sigs (if they are cool) on the other hand I agree with the long loading times, if 10 people in one thread have 2meg sigs, that's 20meg to load a thread...I know that's kinda uncommon...but we should try to keep an eye on the kb size too...

    my 2 cents...

You're the boss, is there a way to put a setting that sigs won't work if the properties are over a certain amount?
