  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

hey guys, a lot of you in the know talk about approved hosts and how from time to time they die, on occasion this is attributed to phun.

Can someone explain this? And are the phun references accurate to tongue in cheek? Obviously picture lord went under recently as an example.

Who runs these hosts? Do they welcome phun using them? If so why do they cease to exists? Would the owners be angry at phun?

    cheers.

I think it has to with bandwidth, and how many times it's accessed.

An example being a 100 Kb .jpg file hotlinked on a page you posted. If 2 people open the thread, the bandwidth being processed by the hosting server is 200 KB total. Multiply this by many more unique views over the course of days, and it can bog down the system entirely. And given the extraordinary number of views in a single day phun accumulates, and sometimes the concerted efforts of members to "group" towards a specific hoster, and it is perhaps feasible why phun can be seen as the sinker of nearly all new hosters.

I'm speculating on this, though, but my explanation makes some kind of true sense to the problem. :)

Thanks, but you have guys here pimping their sites to host images. I presume that this is because they can create a revenue from it. However if that is true why do so many "die"? Poor business management?

hotlinking = no ads, no money for the hoster.
phun = lot of traffic = lot of costs for the hoster.

there have been two hosts who were more or less killed by traffic generated by phun (imageshadow, photos.cx).

hence the referral "phun" generated by clicking on a thumb here imagehosts can resolve the origin of traffic, that´s why quite a few have banned phun - too uch tradffic.
