    A fair many movies are displayed in a different shape than the camera that records them. The easiest comparison is old TV's being close to square in shape and movie theaters being very rectangular. But the camera might have recorded it closer to the square shape. Sometimes, when a movie was being shown on VHS or on TV, they used the footage from the camera which showed parts above and below that would normally be missing in the rectangular movie theater. To the benefit of us around here, they included some boobs that weren't normally seen.

    The "Matte" is the blocking of the image with black space. So "Open Matte" is without any of that covering. Our brains take in information differently based on things like this so you take a picture of a desert and it's pretty great. But if you're a gifted director, you matte it so that you see a vast horizon with less sand below and less sky above and you get a breathtaking and inspiring view of the desert.

    In the modern era with widescreen TVs, this form of "Open Matte" where instead of very widescreen movies (longer thin rectangle) as seen in the theater, you get the less thin rectangle of a home television. So it's not as revealing as the old VHS-era TVs, but it's still more and can reveal great things. Search this forum and you'll see wonderful examples with Olivia Wilde and Alice Eve.
