    I've been in a monogamous relationship for 10 years without being married. Some people just don't place such importance on a piece of paper, as it doesn't validate a relationship. Most people have it ingrained into their minds since childhood that they must follow the "normal" trajectory of getting married, buying a house, having kids, etc.
