    I think both trends are influenced by the fact that tattoos can be inconvenient to your career as an actor/actress. So they look for other ways to express themselves and piercings are easily removed while covering up tattoos is time consuming.

    In terms of nipple piercing, I don't think that's it. Keep in mind that most people are unlikely to actually see the nipple piercing making it a rather poor form of self-expression.
    If I had to guess I'd say the purpose of the nipple piercing was more sexual than anything.
