I don't see anything about shutting down her twitter account and she's right. Verlander was the leader in almost every pitching stat that matters, his team just fucking sucked so he got pegged with a 16-9 record due to no run support.

Also the way the voting works is the main issue. Almost everyone had Verlander 1, Porcello 2. But two writers completely left Verlander off because they don't like him or the Tigers or are just angsty fuckwits. So in a dead heat vote he lost by a couple points because of two fat old idiots making it about themselves.

Baseball needs to revisit how they vote for awards overall. Print is dead and leaving these matters up to crusty old beat writers is antiquated at best. They use their votes for the hall and season awards to push their own agendas and everyone that cares knows it.

Also that tweet was gold. Upton is a ride or die bitch. Much respect.

Actually, if you look at the advanced metrics, Kluber should have won, with Porcello 2nd and Verlander 3rd. Baseball tends to overemphasize the strikeout, which is why Verlander was considered the favorite by many.

In this case, though, they overemphasized wins, which is a completely worthless statistic. Maybe 50 years ago, when pitchers went 8 innings every night, but today the win just means you have a better bullpen or a stronger offense.

Kluber lead the league in Adjusted ERA+, which is like ERA but takes the ballpark into consideration; Fielding Independent Pitching, which is exactly what it sounds like; and Adjusted Pitching Wins, which calculates how much a pitcher contributes to a team's wins.

Kluber was the Cy Young by all the most in-depth and relevant stats.

Gotta admit, baseball certainly stepped up this season. Huge ratings for an exciting series, now rampant discussion about the awards... the baseball Commish is probably feeling pretty good right now.

This is a damn good chart. With Verlander's first in so many categories, you have to go back to the lovely Ms. Upton's question, how the hell do two voters leave Verlander off the ballot entirely?

that has no context.....stats mean nothing without context......i'm a yankees fan who lives in cleveland......the ignorant mascots were wire to wire division leaders.....the other 3 were out of it by july.....the al east had 4 contenders and 3 actually make it. verlander had a twins team that gave up 889 runs in his division...the fact that he is only marginally ahead playing in the weaker division doesn't help verlander.

but does that take competition into context? do you think jv or kluber would want to play in the al east?

Honestly, I think that's overblown. The AL East wasn't historically amazing or anything. They had some good offensive teams, and Boston was pretty great, but Kluber probably would have been fine. And in the postseason he faced two of those teams -- the Red Sox and the Blue Jays -- and had a 0.99 ERA in three starts. Doesn't count towards the voting, but it's an indication that he's capable of pitching well against them.

True enough. But it's not like Verlander had a huge advantage. The Twins had 74 at bats vs. Verlander for a .162 ba. Porcello saw them for 55 at bats and a .200 ba. Not a terribly significant difference. And Verlander handled the Twins better than Porcello.

And I'm not really sure what the Twins' horrible pitching staff has to do with their offense...

it's a team game...they don't play for cy youngs......pitchers pitch vs the opposition to win games. by having a division with a team as bad as the twins is easier than having the yankees and rays.

But the Cy Young is determined by individual performance, not team performance. That's why it's awarded to an individual pitcher and not a team.

And, again, the Twins having a terrible pitching staff doesn't mean they have a terrible lineup. Also, the Yankees were mediocre and the Rays were bad. Strange comparison you're making there.

the teams in the east are better than the central and teams can get hot in the playoffs. that's a difference of him playing maybe 4 games against both of them vs playing each of them 4 times. hitters have more info on you.....

but he didn't have to face the yanks, orioles or blue jays plus division rivals have deeper scouting reports against each other.

They can't pitch, they can't hit, and their clever front office paid Joe Mauer $24 million to hit .261.
