  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

As of 1963, yes they are. Either that's a) an old video, or b) a conventional explosion. Regardless, damn, that's quite a kaboom.

    It's a conventional.
See? No nu-kle-ar flash. No superheated jet of steam. No expanding shockwave at > Mach 3.
No Charenkov flash out beyond the propagation limit (that bright pink light just before the big flash which is always there in an atmospheric detonation of a nuke due to neutrons going faster than the local speed of light in air all at once decaying into alpha and beta particles, with a strong dose of positron collision gamma rays).

Just a rising column of water.

Too bad the video isn't any longer. They should've filmed it from calm water to calm water.
