    Follow these simple steps:

    1) Turn off and disconnect the electrical device.

    2) Clear all fluids and dangerous items from the area, i.e. magnets, explosives, etc.

    3) Ground yourself. If you don't know what that means, go to Circuit City and ask an employee how.

    4) Open the device - not a lot of specifics, just be creative and patient and don't fuck up.

    5) Remove the hard drive - disconnect the serial cords and hold it in your hand.

    6) Dust shit off, and put it back in the device. Reverse steps, reassemble, power up.

    7) Shit should be fixed.

I'm two for two right now, and if it doesn't work for you, then your drive is broken, simple as that.

(Of course, on a hunch, I did switch the last drive's pin settings from "Master with slave present" to "slave" and reclaimed 58.6GB of my 200GB drive, but I don't think that's really important - if you don't have the magic touch like me, better not go off on hunches.)

Fuck thats awesome. Wish this was my problem.

My laptopt just got fixed a few weeks ago for shutting down @ random. Some grounding issue they say, but it happened twice before and it just started doing it again. I was uploading some pic sets and poof. It just clicked and shut off. My only worry is that when Dec 15 '05 comes around (warranty expires) it does it again and I'm fucked with the bill.

Whatever you do with that, good luck. But I'd look into getting a new external hard drive, so when your laptop crashes...you've still got all your precious memories in your hand.

I meant 120+GB's of porn as well, but I was trying to be polite. No reason to point out the obvious.

Oblivious. If the cleaning doesn't work and you really really need the info on that drive. Pics etc.... Take the HD and wrap it up in plastic to ensure moisture doesn't get in the drive. Stick that sucker in your freezer for about 24 hours.

Doesn't always work, but alot of times it will run long enough for you to get data that you need off of it. (NOTE: if the sucker is running fine after doing this, DO NOT keep using it. Get your data off and trash it)

I don't think its a good idea to put hardware into the freezer.. especially when its still warm! Then moisture could build up..

If a laptop simply shuts down randomly than a reason also might be that the CPU gets overheated (or the heat-sensore does not work correctly) and the laptop simply shuts of because of possible overheating..

There are 1000s of resons why hardware does not work properly.. In the case of a laptop the best thing would be to do a google search on the model. also add the keywords random power out

The only way to keep you data safe: RAID ;-)

I've heard of the freezer method and it was in a computer magazine. It's a last resort method, and if I was desperate to get some info off a drive, I would try anything!
