Holly Holm KO's Ronda Rousey in the 2nd Round of UFC 193. Biggest betting upset in UFC history!

I don't follow the UFC like some people do, but I know enough about it to know that Ronda Rousey (12-1) is a fierce competitor who everyone thought was going to go the distance in her career and win out as a near unbeatable champion (well, except for that one time). Holly Holm, herself undefeated (10-1), didn't get much love from the Vegas sports books, closing as a +800 underdog. Or in other words, $1 earns you $8 if she wins. Rousey on the other hand was a -1400 favorite ($14 pays $1). Seems the bookies know their business. For everyone who backed Holm, there were likely a great many more backing the "sure thing."

I lived in Vegas for nearly 20 years, much of that time throwing good money after bad on sporting events, and I'm here to tell you my friends, there ain't no such thing as a "lock."

no reason for holm to be such an underdog, she's a much more experienced fighter with 51 career fights vs rousey's 15.

I enjoyed her after fight interview. Humble yet confident. That's true sportsmanship.

 

saw the last few secs replay and turns out that when you are a judo expert who tries to box with a boxer you are going to lose.

 

Love the fact that Rousey didn't just lose, she got knocked the fuck out.

I don't hate Rousey by any means, but I hate that she got really arrogant and believed she was unbeatable. The whole "AndStill" hashtag she was posting constantly was so cringe worthy, yeah OK she finished her last few fights in under a minute but the moment she was put up against a real opponent she got owned.

Holm wanted to touch gloves before the fight and Rousey refused, which makes the loss even sweeter.

 

I like Ronda, and she seems a nice woman; but now perhaps she'll spend more time in the gym and concentrating on her fights, than posing for magazines and making movie cameos...? the 'day' job should always come first.... imho.

It's the fact that Ronda makes comments like the ones at the start of this video that made her getting schooled so satisfying:

Maybe Ronda got a big head. The one time I don't watch the ufc this happens. I still want to see a Ronda VS cyborg match!

 

One or two good shots on the button is all it takes. I wonder if Rhonda's publicity doing talk shows, promotion, and commercials took her eyes off the prize or she just got beat by a superior fighter. Should make for a good rematch and payday for both.

I fought when I had to growing up in the East End of London.

Doing it for fun seems dense to me.

Not a UFC/MMA fan by any means but it's true that all sports will humble you. Muhammad Ali lost, Babe Ruth eventually lost his power, Joe DiMaggio's hit streak ended, Kobe looks human, Jordan went to the Wizards, everything ends sooner or later. And frankly it seems that the more you shoot your mouth off the more likely it is to be sooner. It's why I hate hearing people declared that they're "the best" before their careers are over. Anyone can get hot for a short streak and then you cool back off. The truly great do it game after game, fight after fight, season after season.

 

Rousey tried to out box a champion boxer/kickboxer and got schooled. By the time Rousey tried for the takedown, she was too tired to get her down or do anything. Everyone forgets that Holm is a champion boxer and it really showed.

 

Holm is the real deal.

Maybe Stallone will cast her in the next Expendables movie.

 

Rousey seemed to tire quickly, that's what happens when you're last few fights are over in seconds. She might not admit it, but she must have started feeling like nobody could possibly beat her.

I'd rather see Gina Carano.

 

Yup, I don't dislike her one bit either, but I think Holly just did Ronda a HUGE favor by (hopefully for her) returning her down to earth which should only be good for Ronda from now on.
