I knew the moment that I read the title that it would be the Chaplin speech from "The Great Dictator"

He truly was a brilliant artist considering he wrote, directed, produced, played the lead role and even composed the music for some of his films. Thanks for sharing it.

FYI, these are the ideals promoted by socialism. Not the crap spewed by Barrack Obama; its a goddamn offense to every socialist in the world to have that label attached to him, get your shit straight people.

"Socialism"? Oh, man, stp52x, now you've scared off half of brainless America with a single word! ;)

Since Perestroika/Glasnost and the downfall of (false!) socialism I can lean back and watch our civilization led by raptor-capitalism go where even the dumb people know it will end: down the cliff. AND THEN, and only then, in their misery, they will realize, that we need each other, that we as mankind are ONE, and that we will, one day, live for and support each other, unconditionally, and not live for money.

I agree with everything in his speech, but none of it really has a socialist agenda.

Indeed. I was born in the Soviet Union during Perestroika.

But I must say that should the totalitarianism of the Soviet Union have spread to the rest of the world, it would hardly have been an improvement in the human condition. We should be grateful, if for nothing else, for the fact that we have this liberty to criticize society, to organize, and to act upon our understanding. As long as we have these rights and we apply them regularly, I have little doubt that we will come to live in a more just, humanitarian, unified and, ultimately, sane world. It is but only a matter of time.

The ideals of socialism spawned from observations and experiences during the hay-day of industrialism in the mid 19th century, an age rampant with the exploitative treatment of the masses and the planet alike--As a critique of capitalism in its most natural, unregulated state. From this common global struggle against the forces of corporate oppression a sense of comradery arose in the masses. Although Chaplin spoke against militarism, in favor of pacifism, in the speech, one could definitely spot undertones of anti-capitalism--which were actually rampant throughout a majority of his films. Made apparent by his persistent use of greed and machinery as a source of man's ails in this instance.
