How do you use it?

 

I'm a fan of Ulead. It has a lot of functionality and has several methods of making the gif. Defilen's cheap-and-nasty checklist:

Grab screencaps from SMPlayer/MKV Player
Open Ulead, File:New. Set the size (should match the caps, obviously).
Add all relevant images. Arrange to taste, crop/resize/framerate options are in Edit.
Save as gif!

Some like to upload the actual video clip into Ulead and gif from that, and it seems other folks have different methods.

 

Every time I try it says Unable to open file?

 

My guess is it may be too big. I don't think it can handle much more than a few seconds of video. You may have to get all your frames the long-way-round, by screencapping them, or extract the few seconds you want from the video file and try that.

Yes. I have a rar file which is only 6 Mb, when you unrar it it's only 15 Mb.

The file has to be playing first (although you can pause it at the start). Select 'Start Taking Screenshots' under the 'Video' tab, or alternately press Shift+D. And you're off! Caps are saved in Owner/.smplayer/screenshots by default.

 

You mentioned having trouble opening video files so I'm not sure if you're opening a large video file or you don't have the proper codecs.

The first thing I do is use a video editor (I use avidemux) to pick out the section I want. Then lower the frame rate (10 frames/sec) which allows me to make longer or higher resolution gifs. Then I crop/resize the video if I feel it's necessary. After that I save the video and open it with ulead gif.

Ulead produces grainy gifs. To minimize that go to the menu, click on file then optimization wizard. It will ask you if you want a global optimized palette, choose "no." Click "next," lower the dither value to 85. Click on advance, where it says "method" choose "minimum variance." Press next a couple of times, finish and then save the gif.

If you feel that the gif is still too large then go to "edit" and resize it.
