I know you probably told us before, but what program are you using for these sigs?

 

i use Lightwave (9.5 i think), lookin at trying cinema 4d sometime soon, but not got it yet. i only do the the actual text in lightwave, then import the image into photoshop to do all the images/compositing

Don't thank me, thank the mods for discussing it, I just threw the idea out there!

As far as the sig I love it all except the text, to me (no offense) it looks like you spent a lot of time on the effects, which turned out fantastic. And then thought "oh shit, I forgot I need my name on here" and just plopped it there. And I don't think it's either the placement or font that's the problem, it's the applied effect; see you clearly put an inner shadow on an orange font to make it look "set into" the sig, but honestly I think you over thought it. I'd just simply drop the color down to a medium/light grey, set the layer to Linear Light and walk away from it. That way the natural light you've created around the text can slightly shine through the text, but not so much to overpower it.

Otherwise it's a tremendous sig Ray, I really enjoy your work!

I think the light source placement made it look flat, and it isnt reflecting off the obvious surfaces as if they were wet, and that kind of scene has to be wet. Too much blood and guts to look dry.

I love the light grid in the back, I dont understand the helmet being lit on the image left side given the lighting source. And if your ambient source is top left, that works ok. If so then you have a spot as your backlight center right to light his left shoulder but the missile on his back pack, which kinda has to be lit exactly the same as the helmet has no spotlight reflection at all, which given it's placement isnt possible.
Since you're studying lighting lately, imo you need a spotlight reflection on the missile and probably on the top of the rifle scope at the lower end, probably fading out as it goes higher to simulate the decreasing light energy.
