Exactly. How is it that this director hasn't been called out on social media for always putting stuff like this in his movies? Good for him, I guess.

 

Poor Things did get some backlash but it died down as the sex and nudity were important to the plot and Bella's character. It wasn't really there to be erotic because the once the thrill of seeing Emma like this goes its not really that sexy. In this new film it doesn't look like its that sexy either, Emma's full frontal scene has her date raped and the big foursome scene is shown in quick snippets on Jesse Plemons TV and his reactions take up most of the scene.

I think the Yorgos guy movies are great. You just have to be ready for a weird, wild ride.

Certain elements in his films are getting more and more criticized. Even "Poor Things" is still getting some heat - recently from Ottessa Moshfegh. I feel like a major backlash could happen soon similar to that of Lars von Trier.

 

Some of the sex scenes in "Poor Things" are clearly shot in a titillating way - even if they're also meant to be funny and part of the larger overall story. Ditto for the sextape in "Kinds of Kindness" (there's even people on Letterboxd describing the movie as "sexy"). I also think Yorgos has weird fetishes that he likes to incorporate into his films.

 

I think it’s perfectly valid to include sex and nudity for the sake of titillation. Even if he’s just expressing his kink, that’s cool too. Just as I think it’s reasonable to criticize it for any of those reasons.

Where I get grossed out is when directors and producers use their power and prestige to exploit actors into doing this kind of work. But Emma is a veteran at this point, and even Margaret has been around a while now, besides having a famous actress for a mother.

 

The fact Emma has done nudity multiple times now with his films must mean she's comfortable and safe. As you said she's a veteran, a Hollywood A-Lister and Oscar winner so if she doesn't want to do it she has all the power to say no.

“Poor Things” has plenty of T&A but it’s not exploitative, in the context of the movie, which is sneakily a feminist celebration.

 

Who or what is Ottessa Moshfegh and why should anyone care what it thinks? I'm genuinely curious.
