Well I know, but I've not found any where you could make a case for her wearing nothing.

Sorry, I just read this and I completely disagree. I am a twenty six year old photographer, but unlike most working in my age group, I learned with true film. At sixteen years old I was a Q Lab certified film processor/ lab tech. That means that Kodak said that bringing your stuff to me was just as good as taking it to them. I have logged nearly 3000 hours in darkrooms over the years.

That being said, the dodge and burn tools ARE NOT like painting. It is a technique that has been around for decades. Perhaps you have heard of Ansel Adams, the famous landscape photographer. He accomplished the depth and power in his work by spending hours in the darkroom making slow exposures of his prints, carefully dodging and burning all the while. The process used to be a little different, granted, but the idea was essentially the same.

The way old printing used to work was this. You would put a film negative into a slide holder and place it into a machine that would expose it to extreme light from the top. The light would travel down through a set of bellows, pass through a lens and eventually fall onto a flat surface with a piece of photographic paper that used the same basic process as film. You could make the image larger by raising the body and then using the bellows to focus. Likewise, you could shift percentages of Red Yellow and Blue to color correct or adjust contrast to a black and white image. In order to dodge, you would turn on the light exposing the paper to the image projected and by using your hand, a piece of paper or a random object over the area you want to lighten. By cutting down the amount of time a specific area is exposed to light, you could brighten it up a little bit or cut back on the detail. Likewise, if you wanted to burn, you would cover everything except the area you wanted to darken and let that area get exposed for a longer period of time.

The way I see it, any technique that has been in use for as long as dodging and burning have been isnt cheating and CERTAINLY isnt painting or putting things in where they didnt belong. It is, in essence, just darkening or lightening specific areas. If using dodging and burning is cheating, then you have to consider anything you do to an image to be a cheat as it manipulates the original image.

Sorry, Im so anal about this. I am a purist of sorts and I constantly have arguments like this with my brother who is the kind of photographer who runs six Photoshop filters over his images to get them to look the way he wants them to where as I believe if you call yourself a photographer you should be able to do it with only basic tools and skill behind the lens (unless you are going for something that necessitates more).

All pics on this thread are supposed to be "Photoshopped." People of Phun use their Photoshop skills to make an xray effect, as seen by all the pics in this thread.
