    Well spend 60 minutes Mudlarking and found nothing (but probably contracted something in the mud condition) then in the last 5 minutes, I found a 16th Tudor roof tile!

    Now home long shower (might take a while) then thank you lunch with our Mudlarking friend.

    I remember times like that as a kid at Grandma's place on the river. With extreme low tides you could walk the rivershore and find all sorts of things. I still have a few Confederate cannonballs and slugs.

    On my last house, which was a converted village school - originally built about 1850 - all the roof tiles were handmade like your tile was.
    Modern terracotta tiles are machine formed and cut for matching precision, but the old handmade ones were all roughly the same but each was unique.
    So roof building was something of a work of art, picking tiles that fitted together reasonably!
    I wonder what the hole in your tile was for? How big is the piece?

    PS On second thoughts the hole, of course, would be for the nail or peg from which the tile was hung. The tile above it would overlap and cover that point.
    My tiles had a "Nib" (a projection) at the top of the underside which hooked over a batten or ledge from which the tile hung.
