The thing is that the trolls and many others have decided that they don't don't want to "just deal" and behave. If the majority of people are pansies that get offended off of every insult... then good! It's a fun way to mess with them for being so uptight/weak willed. Call it rebellion against PC culture if you wish. The funny thing is that people don't realize that they don't have a right to not be offended. Freedom of speech is a right (in the US anyways) and while it might not be nice to insult someone or say something mean, just because you get offended by it doesn't mean anything. It's the person on the receiving end who ultimately has to "deal" because there are no repercussions for offending someone.

Phun is not a democracy. There is no majority rules. There's no freedom of speech. There is only what the moderation crew allow. Our job as moderators is to make this place as welcoming and enjoyable as possible. Thats what draws content posters and in turn, leechers, lurkers and commenting members. You can argue the validity, or lack thereof, when it comes to freedom of speech and having tough skin or whatever else you would like to argue until you are blue in the face. It will not change the fact that some of us moderators feel that the over the top derogatory comments are detrimental to the forum in some form. Doesn't matter if you like it or not. We are very lenient and tolerant here at phun. We like banter and back and forth. It's one of the things that have always separated us from the crowd. However, that doesn't mean we are willing to allow things to get out of hand just to maintain that standard. The board comes first, before the members. Go to another board and see if you get away with the majority of shit that we allow here. We dont like having to come down hard on people but sometimes there is no choice. Especially when we offer advice or direction on how to avoid us having to do so and it either falls on deaf ears or becomes an opportunity to show everyone how witty a person can be by trying to dance around the expectation that had been set forth.

You can cherrypick now but you originally make a blanket statement that everything about feminism is wrong.

I didn't say people shouldn't be healthy; the so-called "fat acceptance movement" is about less shaming of overweight people and more about acceptance. What it is NOT is an endorsement of an unhealthy lifestyle.

I'll never understand why some feel that only politicians have a right to make political statements; that's just ridiculous. If it turns you off enough then don't buy their music, watch their movies, whatever. I'm sure the celebs are aware of that risk.

Of course, this is understandable. Which is why I don't troll, especially on this site. However, I do like to comment on these types of topics and it seems like the purpose of this thread was for Scribe to try and understand the mean comments. People seem to not like my answers but I am am giving some solid reasons. And my answers have also been in a broader sense encompassing conversation outside of the forum to expand on freedom of speech, general conversation, insults, bullying, and scrutiny of celebrities. I understand that Phun is not a democracy and the conversations can be shut down at any point. And for the most part, this forum is very lenient which is a good thing. If you believe that the derogatory comments are detrimental to the forum, then why not put up a poll and ask everyone? Honestly, I think dumb comments like "boy she got fat" are not worth the effort to censor and are easily ignored. I don't think they harm the forum at all. Now you say you want to bring the most people to the forum as possible and not let things get out of hand. Well ignore the silly one liners and let people debate. Only ban those people that truly deserve it. I think most people on the internet, especially here, appreciate the freedom and can handle a little foul language without getting scared away. What does scare people away is censorship. Banning someone for a silly comment is one surefire way to guarantee that person doesn't return.

Feminism was good while it was needed to gain women equality. Now that they have it, Feminism has changed into superiority over men which is wrong. And don't kid yourself, the fat acceptance movement is about making fat people feel better about themselves which decreases any incentive they have to lose weight and become healthy. It is totally about being comfortable overweight and unhealthy. And I never said only politicians should have political opinions, I said people who are trying to sell the public something should refrain from making these kind of comments/statements and tarnishing their brand. For the most part, I do avoid supporting the celebrities that have big mouths and I know a lot of other people do as well (Can you say Colin Kaepernick? Not a movie star but I'm sure you get the point). You often see movies tank at the box office when celebrities are on the wrong side of issues as well. Even if they are aware of the risk, sometimes the fallout was more than they were expecting.

Yeah, I was talking more in life in general about majority rules, not at Phun. I should have kept it to topic.
So many times I wished things were this way or that, but the majority seem to make things how they are, and it is often not how we individually like or want it to be. Anyway back to the world of Phun. :2cent:

Oh, I understand the meanness just fine. It's small-minded. What vexes me is why people wish to be seen as small-minded.
That's the purpose of a ban.

BTW, I don't hand out 2 week bans anymore. My personal policy is to let people prattle on until they become intolerable and then kick 'em to the curb for good. Like fantasmaguy. Everything he posted was either negative or snide. 2 weeks off ain't gonna fix that so why bother?

Is this your first time at phun, or better yet, the internet? The harmless little comments like "boy she got fat" may be easy for you to ignore, but you are not the only person that visits this site. I can't count the amount of 10+ page threads that have happened because of lines like that. Not to mention the flaming and arguing and name calling. The problem is finding a happy medium. If that means getting rid of comment such as the ones you mentioned then so be it. They add absolutely nothing to the forum anyway.

As to your last point, it is very rare that someone gets banned for a comment. Even when someone does get banned for a comment, the reason for the ban is usually that said person has ignored a moderator when he was given an opportunity to slow his role. Bottom line is you don't have to like it but you will respect it or your visitation rights will be revoked.

I'm online all day. Mostly because of work but still. I read the comment section of articles, tweets, etc. nonstop. I come on phun a lot but I don't comment a whole lot until I find something that peaks my interest. Maybe I'm desensitized to it but the small petty comments I see as just part of having an open comment section. I read the news a lot and some news websites don't allow comments on their articles probably because of comments like these but I feel like those websites are only scared of criticism. Sure some comments will be bogus/inflammatory but that just comes with the territory. Having an open comment section and not getting these comments is like saying you are going to go online and not run into anything offensive. I open my inbox and have 100 ads for porn sites so its a good thing I'm not easily offended. I agree that these comments add little to discussions and run the threads exceedingly long unnecessarily, but so do the positive ones. "geez I'd really love to bang her" with the 10 "me too" comments afterwards adds nothing to the discussion either but they are more positive. Perhaps a word count minimum to prevent all of these short messages like this and make sure what people are posting is substantial?

Please do not associate a disability with a negative behaviour. Doing so derogates deaf people. It's more accurate to say: "ignore" or "disregard" instead because those words are related to an individual's actions - not someone condition.

The way that you play ignorant to a common phrase in an attempt to seem clever is really amazing. Credit where credit is due. It's almost as if you aren't playing at all.

I have email addresses for work and personal. I haven't ever received an ad for a porn site. Maybe I live too clean.

It's a common phrase that's founded on an ableist view that having a disability is an undesirable state of existence. In this area, I have over 25 years of research and counselling experience. Nevertheless, I did ask nicely instead of going on an rant.

In view of the tone in your response and scribes "thanks", I leads me to believe that the biggest troll are among the moderation crew. Ban me if you wish; it would prove my piont!

25 years of research all for naught it would seem. My usage of the phrase had no negative connotations towards anyone with a disability. If you cant see that given the context in which it was used, perhaps you need a new hobby. Please bring your crusade to a more appropriate place.

For what its worth, your attempt at trolling is so weak, that I just cant muster the desire to ban you. Feel free to stay away on your own though.

Being deaf is not a negative? If I had to choose every year between deaf and being able to hear, I'd sign up every year for "hearing." And I can't believe you wouldn't too.
