If you do the overhead view, you'll see the "Scenic Fashion" store 2 blocks down and the backside of the "Vancouver Ski and Board" sign (notice the blue/white lettering on the backside of the sign). http://www.vanski.ca/_img/logo_vanski.png

BTW..this took me about 3 minutes. I used to do a similar thing for a living.

Did you look at the geotags in the image?

 

No, using landmarks, buildings, etc.. This one was easy.

I used to do similar stuff in the military using old fashioned topographic maps or using 1m map data stored on huge hd's (before google maps/earth).
Now the bad guys are a lot smarter and making sure there isn't any obvious landmarks/identifiable terrain features, etc.. in the background of their videos/photos.

I'll just randomly do it for fun every now and then...like I'll see a famous old photo and try to figure out the exact spot it was taken based on the background buildings/key features combined with google maps. It's usually only historical photos.

Example....there is a famous photo of Jack Kerouac standing/smoking on a balcony of Ginsburg's old apartment...I remember trying to locate the exact balcony on google maps.

No idea if you've ever played geoguessr, similar in context but landmarks etc are a rarity. Most of the time it seems to be in the middle of nowhere.

Oddly, I guessed within 10 miles of somewhere in Baltimore MD because I recognised it from watching The Wire. And yet i'm completely crap at recognising anywhere here in the UK unless I see a phone number (or obvious street sign).

I do shit like that all the time, I spent god knows how long looking for the location of my Granddad's POW camp in south Berlin (Marienfelde) based on a few photos he had taken in captivity. Tiergarten is fascinating when you use streetview and footage on Youtube filmed in the summer of 1945. They may as well have been different planets.
