Maggie Gyllenhaal was told 37 is too old to play love interest of a 55-year-old man?

I had the exact same thought. Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Rosamund Pike, Katie Holmes, Reese Witherspoon, etc, wouldn't have had this problem. (Assuming they did as well in an audition).

Maggie looks alright sometimes, at least she has a nice body. But, objectively speaking, she's not even the prettiest Gyllenhall.

 

It's just the latest thing that feminists are determined to be outraged about. Those poor, oppressed, millionaire actresses have it so tough.

Short and simple answer, she spoke out about her disappointment in Obama, last year and now she's dealing with the backlash. They aren't going to tell her up front she didn't get the part, because of what she told the press, nope . They'll make up a BS response like this. That's how it work. I didn't say it's Obama's fault. 99% of Hollywood is liberal, if you want to continue to get steady work in Hollywood, you have to comform to the majority mindset even if you don't agree. You keep your mouth shut and "play the part". Maggie spoke out and now she has to deal with the backlash. It's similar to what happened with Stacey Dash.

 

From Bambi eyes to a proper actor. Smart decision. Her dying in The Dark Knight would've turned it into a comedy. Just like the ending of Seven.

Secondly, WTF? Really, you think that Maggie is being targeted because she spoke out?

Stacey Dash is a C-/D+ actress, not even in Maggie's league and no one cares about her political views, hell 99% of the population doesn't even know what they are.

The reality is high quality female actors will always be judge by their looks first and talent second.

That said, Katie was badly miscast as a crusading big city district attorney. Didn't buy her for a minute.

Plenty of people, even celebs, have expressed disappointment in Obama by now, especially from the left. Just look at his poll numbers. That wouldn't matter.
She's have to come out against gay marriage or something like that to actually hurt her career.

 

Is she so stupid she didn't know this would happen? She was never very attractive in the first place, but she's lower quality than a typical housewife in the grocery now.

Honestly, I do believe she's being targeted. Before she made her statement, Maggie's Sundance TV show An Honorable Women was being heavily advertised for weeks; I got sick of seeing the commercials day after day. Then when she made her statement. Next thing I knew CNN, MSNBC, FOX, TMZ, Comedy Central, Yahoo News, The Daily Mail, all covered what she said and like clockwork, no more An Honorable Woman commercials. I haven't even seen her do a single TV interview since then.

As for the similarities to Stacey Dash, Stacey got the same media coverage when she came out in support of Mitt Romney as Maggie did when she said she was disappointed in Obama. Stacey got blacklisted in Hollywood. Rumor has it, she made friends with someone at Fox News and they hired her.

I really hope Maggie doesn't end up blacklisted; I've always found her very very attractive and she's been the reigning Queen of my spank bank, since I first saw her in the Secretary back in 2002.

 

That's the entertainment industry for you. I used to be a huge fan of foreign cinema and they are worse than Hollywood in that regard. Particularly the French.

Seeing Colin Firth romance Emma Stone or Jim Carey romance Zooey Dechanel just gets creepy as hell after awhile. Unfortunately, it only seems to be getting worse. There are plenty of gorgeous and age appropriate actresses available to star alongside these leading men. They need to hire a few more of them. It's not like these roles are explicit and require a young, firm body. So much is image and name recognition that's it's really not about the acting; it's about the actor's commercial appeal.

Of course, maybe it's just Emma Stone. She is making a habit of getting banged by older gentlemen on screen these days. Outside of Spider-Man. that is.

 

Not fair because Maggie Gyllenhaal has always looked like a 50 year old woman even when she was busier.

i think most actors who try out for roles don't get them? because usually more than one person tries out for a role. but yes hollywood hates women over 40. jennifer aniston. jennifer lopez. sofia vergara. salma hayek. cameron diaz. eva longoria. sandra bullock. courteney cox. kate beckinsale. elizabeth hurley. halle berry. penelope cruz. monica bellucci. amy adams. eva mendes. nicole kidman. jennifer garner. naomi watts. rachel weisz. hollywood will never cast these women.
