Maggie Gyllenhaal was told 37 is too old to play love interest of a 55-year-old man?

Maggie Gyllenhaal is an Oscar-nominated, award-winning actress — but even she has troubles getting roles because of that irksome little problem Hollywood has with sexism.

Gyllenhaal revealed in an interview with The Wrap that she once got turned down for a role because of her age, despite the male co-lead being 18 years older than her, “There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time. I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh.”

Maybe the plot had to do with an older man and a younger woman.

I'm really not trying to throw a stick of dynamite into the room here, but I honestly think she's just not in the least bit pretty, and some casting director thought he was more tactful to say she was too old rather than too ugly.

Firstly, Phun should hand out sticks of dynamite upon entering the site, because this place is WAY more exciting when things are blowing up. Secondly, I think the real reason she was denied is because no one on this planet would be able to pronounce her last name correctly if they hadn't heard her name pronounced correctly from someone who pronounced her name correctly. Thirdly, there is no thirdly.

Oh, it's no secret

 

I've always liked her, found her to be quirky cute and she's a talented actress and has done enough nudity to create a decent resume in my book.

If what she says is true, then the producers better be sure that a younger and smoking hot actress gets the role and then basically performs fellatio on-screen with full frontal nudity to get out of this mess. Just saying.

 

I fully agree. She is not "ugly" or anything, just not as "pretty" as other standard actresses. Her brothers must have gotten the other half of the gene pool in regards to looks.

And then what I read somewhere and found spot-on: why would a 37 year old woman apply to playing the role of a 20 years old pretty woman and then feel a bit let down by it?

 

It was idiotic for any journalist to run with this story based only on Gyllenhaal's statement. We don't know anything about the movie, the character she was up for, the character of the love interest, whether 55 is the age of the male character or the actor playing him.

If the 55-year-old man is the character of Humbert Humbert in a remake of ******, then there's not much for Gyllenhaal to complain about.

 

I think she is very cute!

If the role is the story of a girl in her 20's being the lover of an older man, she's not right at 37 - I haven't seen any details about the role in the reports.
