  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

Generic (?) Phun question.

I hope I don’t come off sounding either dumb or an ass with this inquiry (methinks I am neither dumb nor an ass - but that’s a personal opinion). That said, I do admit I don’t understand all this file sharing thing. I have a serious question. Please answer/reply in “Phun for Dummies” terms….

I’ve been a member of Phun for some time. I recently got my third ‘slap on the hand’ (which resulted in a 14 day suspension from the site) for: ‘bumping picture or video threads that have been inactive for more than 2 weeks.’

OK, Phun doesn’t want a bunch of old threads bumped to the top of the heap. I kinda get that. What I do NOT get is why the vast majority of posts on Phun *are* old. If the posts are more than two weeks old, and if the link is dead, instead of slapping my hand why doesn’t Phun just delete them? (What am I missing??)

Proving, further, my simplicity, I continue with an example…. I find the name of a porn star who impresses me named “abc.xyz.” I come to Phun to search and find out more about porn person “abc.xyz.” I find twenty uploads of the cutie “abc.xyz.” But all are months or years old. The posts are old and the links are dead.

What good, pray tell, are most of the uploads to Phun when they have been “inactive,“ the links are dead, and we are slapped/suspended if we dare comment on them?

Sincere question. Thanks for any sincere answer.

That's a BIG job, and no one has the time to moderate that.

Private message the OP or look elsewhere.

After 2 weeks, clicking "Thanks" is all you need do, unless you can add active links or alternative links (all approved hosts btw and post correctly according to the rules)

Just for the record, the content wasn't dead in the thread resulting in your suspension. It was just a bump of a 2 year old thread with a comment.

But imagine again—in your scenario—where you search for a name. You find a bunch of posts of various dates for the same person. Some people will do that and bump a handful or more of those posts with some inane comment like "wow, hot". Not only does that flood the forum with those thread titles out of nowhere that aren't relevant to anything other than whatever you felt like searching for, but the mods have to recheck all those threads.

I'm not a mod and can't comment on how problematic your posts were in that regard, but that's the general idea of why forums having bumping rules.

We do sometimes, it's just too hard to keep up to date with all the old posts. But if you see a thread where all the links are dead try contacting the poster via PM if it's new enough that you think they might still be around with a re-up. If it's really old, either let it go or report it in the Forum Issues thread. You can also click the report button [IMG] though that's more useful for when you'd like to report abuse or something privately. You don't have to go looking for them because there will be a ton, but if you come across a completely dead post organically, let the poster or the mods know.

Also, if you get in trouble and don't understand why, talk to the mod that warned you. They are all reasonable people and will be happy to clarify the rules in the mutual interest of not having to deal with the same problem next time.

I thank you, Perfect and Green, for your replies. Again, after all the years on Phun, call me a newbie but I still don't understand. Please explain why Phun keeps a zillion old/expired posts/links on the site when all these old/expired posts/links do is get guys like me in trouble. What is the advantage to a site like Phun to keep months and years old posts on their sight when all these old post do nothing other than get guys like me into trouble?

There may be multiple reasons for all I know and I can't speak for Phun on most of them. But one unavoidable reason is that it's simply easier this way.

It's out of our control when links die on these external hosts; sometimes it's days or sometimes it's years. If we made it policy that we delete any post older than some given time frame some percentage of those posts would still have good links. There's a disadvantage in that we'd be throwing away some content. If we tried to ensure that we always delete posts with dead links in a timely manner there's a disadvantage in that it takes time and effort to find and deal with them.

It's not that we want dead links, it's just that it's probably not the best use of our time to fight such a never-ending problem. We could try to move mountains or you could just ignore and walk around them.

Now that you know the rule, why would it get you into trouble again? Here's the rule of thumb I would use: If you got to the thread by browsing the first few pages of the forum section, then comment away. If you got to it through a search, you should look at the dates and let it rest if it's old.

Like a lot of other members in similar situations, if you had bothered to read the rules in the first place, you wouldn't have got into trouble. Under the General Rules section of each Forum Rules thread is a word of caution about bumping old threads with pointless comments and requests for reups of dead links. It's also spelled out in the Courtesy & Consideration section of the Phun Personal Conduct Guidelines. To wit,
It never ceases to irk me when people claim ignorance once they've got themselves into trouble for doing something they shouldn't have done in the first place. We put a great deal of time and consideration into the rules of this forum, all based on past experience and the problems that arise on a regular basis, so members can avoid getting into trouble with the moderators. Trust me when I tell you that, for us, a good day at phun is when we don't have to take corrective measures against anyone because everything is working as it should be. Why we archive old content is irrelevant. The rules inform our members how to deal with it in the simplest terms possible.

I thank you guys, once again, for replying to my sincere inquiry. GreenBastard, YourPalJustine, and J3scribe. (J3scribe, sorry to be one of those kind of guys who “irk” you.) Although I don’t completely understand, I think I understand Phun forums a bit better after your replies.

While I still don’t fully understand why it’s easier for Phun to let years-old posts remain in the forum instead of deleting them, I’ll accept that as a fact. I remain disappointed in that finding a years’ old file featuring cute named “abc.xyz” is listed on Phun -- but not available to download. More often than not, I prefer porn stars that are more than ‘two weeks old!’

Nonetheless, in the future, I will make every conscience attempt to download/comment on posts less than two weeks old. Thanks again and I’ll try to behave/follow the rules in the future.

Allow me to illustrate. The url of this thread is forum.phun.org/showthread.php?t= 1460267. The number 1460267 represents the number of threads (threads, not posts) that have been created on this forum, which is to say: 1 million, 460 thousand, 267 threads. Every day sees the addition of another 250+ threads to the various forums, and they add up fast as the days go by. Each moderator's time is limited, we don't get paid by the hour. It's enough of a task to address the issues that crop up on a day-to-day basis. Sifting through nearly one and a half million threads to weed out the dead links would be a full time job for a crew of four.

BTW, this response is the 8 million, 305 thousand, ninetieth post on this forum.
