2014 SI Swimsuit Model Tournament - Vote Now

Hello, everyone! I had a lot of fun running the 2013 SI Swimsuit Model Tournament, so I’ve decided to do it again for 2014.

Last year, Marisa Miller walked away with the title. Who will it be this year? You’ll decide.

The tournament will start this Friday, September 5!

(NOTE: This is a restart of the 2014 tournament, which I had to abort early on due to health issues. So, there may be some posts that were part of the initial attempt. The restarted 2014 tournament begins on the post here. We are starting anew!)

There is one big change compared to last year’s tournament. I was inspired by the World Cup, so I created a similar format for the 2014 competition.

There will be two stages to the competition: the Group Stage and the Knockout Stage. At the end of it all, the 234 models will be whittled down to one champion!

Group Stage:

There are 47 groups, each of which have 5 models (with the exception of Group 1, which has 4 models.) In the Group Stage, each model will be matched up once with each of the other models in their group. The first place model in each group at the end of the Group Stage will advance to the Knockout Stage. Ties are decided by average vote percentage per match. Only the first place model is assured her place in the Knockout Stage, but there is still hope for those who don't finish in first place in their group. Of the remaining models, the 34 best performing models will also be granted "wild card" entry into the Knockout Stage.

In total, therefore, there will be 81 models who advance to the Knockout Stage.

Knockout Stage:

The Knockout Stage matches are elimination matches. The winner advances, and the loser is eliminated from the tournament.

The 47 first place finishers from each group will be granted a First Round bye. The 34 wild card entrants will compete in First Round matches, and the 17 winners will advance to the Second Round, therefore leaving 64 models to compete for the championship.

Each match will have a voting period of five days. After the voting period is over, I’ll announce the winner of each match. I’ll be keeping the group standings and the brackets on my blog, as I did last year. (Yeah, you’ll notice that the blog is basically never updated, except for when I do this tournament!)

EDIT: This was my post from back in June. The tournament is restarting on September 5. Yay!

Due to a personal health issue, I am going to have to shut down the competition before it really gets started. I won't be available or able to put the time in. Hopefully, I can be back someday and do this again. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for participating this year and last.

Yes, TRL. Thanks... sorry about this. I hope to get through it and come back to restart a competition in the fall. We'll see! Thanks for participating... it's a lot of fun to do.

 

I'm happy to report that I'm doing better and anticipate that I will restart the competition (from the beginning, with an improved format) sometime in early September.

Should I keep the same thread, and maybe just edit the previous posts - especially the first one?

Yes, it is a lot of effort, but I enjoy it. What really makes me enjoy it is when I get good participation and chatter/feedback about the matches. I like reading others' opinions on things. So, it's all cool for me. Just happy you (and many others) are enjoying the fruits of my labor.

My spin:
Going in, there were really only two matches that I figured would be close (Hoopes/Mazza and Seymour/Aldridge). But, in each of them, we had ourselves a rather convincing winner, which makes their wins quite impressive considering their competition. I thought it was interesting to see the first two 2014 rookies in the tournament, and the fact that Lily Aldridge, one of the cover girls, lost her first match while fellow rookie Samantha Hoopes won hers. One can argue that Lily’s competition was stiffer, so I wonder how Samantha and Lily would fare if matched up directly. Alas, they’re in different groups this year, so that is unlikely to happen. Wait ’til next year, as the saying often goes.

Disappointed about Lily Aldridge losing, though against a classic like Stephanie Seymour, it was to be expected, I suppose. Jessica Gomes and Carla Campbell was a tough one for me, because they've both been pocket favorites of mine, though I did vote for Jessica. That was one of those "no wrong answer" match-ups, where either way I couldn't complain. Little surprised Marisa Miller didn't score 100% on her competition. I hadn't heard of Kathy Loghry before, and Marisa was the "Kate Upton" of her day (if you consider she was SI's perennial face, and also remember her "day" was all of maybe 6 years ago).
