I still do it, just to a lesser degree. I help out friends and acquaintances. But the reason chat rooms worked so well was the anonymity, which social media mostly killed off. Everything comes with a name attached now, which makes people a lot less likely to open up.

Mostly the old IM chat rooms (aim, msn, yahoo, etc.).

I'm busy picking my pictures for the next few weeks for the YPotD thread.

I went there a few times between 2005-2010, it was mostly all just bots and spammers. I had more luck on website chatrooms.

All the personal stuff was done through private messaging. The actual chat rooms were mostly just people asking "A/S/L." Man that brings back memories, things were so much different back then.

I used websites as well, I just can't remember the names of any of them.

    I remember a/s/l.

Things were really different back then, I think chatrooms and IMs are pretty much dead now. I say "back then" but it was really just 6-7 years ago.

Yeah but technology has come a long way since then. I mean these days every kid has a cell phone. I didn't get a cell phone until my senior year of high school. And even then, there was no such thing as a smart phone. That phone was primitive compared to cell phones now.

Yup. I remember not wanting to be on Facebook and being forced onto it by a friend, back then Facebook was still that "new thing" and everybody I knew was on MySpace.

I was on MySpace. I probably still am, but I haven't been there in a long time. I was also on Deviant-Art, although I never actually submitted any of my own artwork. Have a blank Facebook page. Not on twitter or instagram or any other social media. There was a site (around 2002) called school-scum that caused a lot of trouble. It got shut down by the host after only a few months.

Ugh, to this day I hate chatrooms because of those people on AOL. If you were a girl, as soon as you logged on 50 of them would hit you right away.

Used to make it suck if you wanted to go on real quick to get something. Each of those pop ups would make you have to wait that much longer for whatever page to load if at all.

MySpace revamped itself into a music site, so all the old stuff is gone. I have accounts for just about everything, but never really use them.

I think they actually brought back everyone's old accounts because so many people complained. At least it looked like they did when I was on there a few days ago.

Yeah, MySpace was great for streaming music after everyone left. They had tons of full albums up from a bunch of my favorite artists.

:yup: There was a very short period when I was like that too. If you were smart, you learned very quickly that that wasn't the way to go about it. Most of the time girls would come to me though. Like I said, people for whatever reason found me easy to talk to.

I don't blame you for doing it, I probably would have too if the situation was reversed.

But yeah, there was definitely a way to go about it. Go to the people looking at that time. Don't im a random stranger that just signed on because she's female.

Sure, you could hide your online status, but sometimes I would hope that someone I knew would be on and wanted them to see me. AOL was quite the game.

And on Myspace, I was one of those annoying people with a ton (but not too many) of cute & skanky glitter images on their page and had E-Town Concrete blasting for my visitors in the background. *memories*

When you're young & horny it's very easy to have a one-track mind.

I always tried to establish a common interest before I would PM someone, unless I could tell it was someone who needed help.

I remember some girls would have their cell number in their standby message. Of course you had to be on their friend list to see it, but it's still asking for trouble.

Probably for the better I didn't have one until I was 18 ('99). That was back when they had green screens and no cameras.

I don't even remember if that first one texted or not. Not that many people had them yet. People were still into beepers.
