New PHUN Banner?

I thought this was so old it was done with. I'd like to have a go too.

 

Go for it, the more the merrier.

 

a) there`s more or less only one power - Cayne... so in the end, no matter how many polls we have he`s the one to decide which one to take. it`s his site, in the end. he could be a little more interested/supportive here, imho.

anyways.

b)

c) i do know there are more people here capable of creating a new banner. i`m a little "disappointed" about the lack of participants (kind of a trend here - SOTW, replies in certain sections, for example). that`s no downgrade of what has been done so far, btw.

d) (and this is personal, not necessarily staff- or overall-view)
- check phun.org and have a overall-design in mind (colors, fonts, ...)
- we probably shouldn`t have a too-nsfw-banner

 

Given the considerations, I would say that you shouldn't change a thing. Or change everything.

If Impact is the preferred typeface, don't change to that, because it's awful. Rockwell, or whatever slab serif that is, is much better. If you want a bold/black sans there are better choices (Bebas, League Gothic, etc). Other than that, you could be tempted to change either the girl or the treatment of the lettering. Both could be changed if nothing else than for a fresh look, but I don't think they are really hurting anything. They aren't the weak points.

From what I've seen the worst part of the logo is the fact that it doesn't blend naturally into the rest of the header gradient. The worst part of the design, in general, is that it's the default vBulletin design which has always been very drab. You want blue? Cool, but pick one shade of it that is a bit more interesting as the accent and make the rest of the site shades of gray. When everything is a desaturated blue, I feel like I'm on some page saluting fallen IBM employees. If you wanted to break from the color scheme and the design in general, I think the options would begin to open up. If you aren't willing to go to those extremes, being "familiar" in the default vB sense isn't exciting, but it works well enough. People know it.

I would change the design of both phun.org and forum.phun.org drastically or not at all. A small cosmetic change to the banner wouldn't hurt anything, but would it actually help? I guess we'd be sticking with the concept of masturbation.

I will happily change the forum header to whatever the majority of mods/users agree on. I don't have any specific requirements, other than it should fit to the general vBulletin theme and like somebody mentioned, it should blend with the background.

The vBulletin layout might be "a bit boring" but it's pretty much bulletproof and basically all websites are using it, sometimes with slight changes, but I think the less you go away from the original layout the better. As most users are used to this type of layout and changes most likely won't improve the surfer experience. But if somebody got good arguments why a change would help, I'm all ears.

Regarding the frontpage, I think I'll leave the current one up - it's been there since five years and if I don't do a complete re-design of the website, I don't think it makes much sense to change the header image.

 

I will get to work on a poll for the acquired content in this thread in the next couple days.

 

it´s never too bad to have more "options" to choose from - anyone into "themed" ones (christmas, upcoming 10th birthday of phun etc.)?

This was one of the suggestions in the "What would You Do To Improve Phun" thread, if I'm not mistaken. Anyone who wants to make a contribution of their work, post your work here and I'll urge cayne to have a look now and then to see if any of it tickles his fancy.

The next American holiday of note will be Independence Day, the 4th of July. But even if you're not an American feel free to create banners that may celebrate something interesting from your native land.

 

These are good ideas and should put life in this section..

I wish I had even a little bit of creative/technical knowledge to contribute.
