The whole nudity/behavior thing really is passé-Madonna went MUCH farther in her sex book-really Miley isn't even that daring.

For the music end of it-Miley actually has a workable voice, and she's well trained by the best in the business. It's a very bluesy, smoky kind of timbre tho, oddly matched to her current catalog. The thing is, she was all set up to make a big run at country, or at least country rock. Her Dad is a very successful publisher, and had a number of great songs lined up, starting with The Climb which got her a lot of attention in Nashville. She didn't have the classic country voice, but she could deliver the songs, and she had some good ones waiting.

Then she ran into a problem. Let's say more of an oncoming train: Taylor Swift. Pitchy vocals or not she's a lights out songwriter, and a much deeper artist. Miley's not the only one who had to find a new niche because of swift, but she's the most notable. So Miley moved to pop, where her old audience had grown up and dug the vibe she had. She's good at what she does, not great, but that's pop.

The idea that she has no talent is baseless. she CAN sing, and if someone would find her some great songs we would be having a different discussion about her status. She is more than capable of delivering them if someone would just write her some. She will at some point need to be taken more seriously than she is now to have a real career, but she will get a couple chances to try that when she's ready. Then she'll have to put her clothes back on and compete as an artist. We shall see at that time what she's really got.

 

What the hell is this fascination about her voice all about? Do you people honestly believe that the ability to sing has anything to do with creating music? My sister can fucking sing. This doesn't make her an artist anymore than it makes this woman an artist.

But of course, this isn't about whether or not Miley Cyrus is an artist, this is about whether or not she can perform and entertain. And she obviously can. Much the same way a stripper can perform and entertain. But thousands of people aren't going to gather in a strip club and watch a random woman grind her snatch on a pole. But if the stripper's name is Miley Cyrus and her face is plastered all over the media, then it becomes acceptable, because she.......can sing? Is a musician? An artist?

At least a stripper won't insult an entire art-form at the end of her shift by making the claim that she's an artist. Artistry requires creativity, ingenuity, the ability to create something that's enduring and meaningful. And it's denigrating to the entire art-form to associate people who treat the field with such fervid contempt. Because what she does has nothing to do with the music. She, and her music, are the means to an end. The means being catchy toons and sexual provocation that teenagers and young adults can associate with and dance to. People want to get laid and they think if they listen to this shit they'll get laid. The end is profit. Money, that's it.

But for any artist, the art is the end in itself. Not the attention you receive for the art, not the money you receive, or the reputation. The art is all that matters. But if the art is all that mattered, you can rest-assured you would never see a half-naked woman spreading her legs and slapping her crotch in front of a camera. That has nothing to do with art.

No, this woman is an entertainer. And we should treat her with the same standards and expectations that we would treat any other entertainer of her league: a stripper. She's an over-glorified stripper.

 

I don't entirely disagree with what you're saying, but just as a point of fact that many of history's greatest artists, from all genres, made art as primarily a way to make money. Not strictly for arts sake. That is a fairly modern viewpoint. Art for its own sake has only been about the last hundred years or so. Prior to that it was done for profit, with the creation of art as a secondary concern to the craftsman

 

Is Pamela Anderson a good actress? Is Alexandra D'Addario going to win an academy award? Are the Jenner sisters going to create a cure for cancer? Will Katy Perry ever be a world renowned opera singer? Is Alessandra Ambrosio going to go up into space? Will Kate Upton ever be a Rhodes Scholar?

No. No. No. No. No.

We like these women b/c of their physical appearance. Not b/c of their talent, religious beliefs, or political holdings. She has a modicum of talent propelled by her former disney history. She is not an artist in any sense of the word to anybody but her.

 

The distinction is that the artist would create even if he didn't make money in the process. There are countless instances of artists being dirt poor throughout history, yet they continued to work because the satisfaction of creating the art far outweighed the desire for profit. Art in its most natural state is for its own sake. It's only when other ulterior motives are introduced that the creative process is corrupted.

And that's precisely the point that I'm making! Let's appreciate them for what they are: basically, physical sensations. But let's not confuse them for what they are not, just because the label of musician, or actress is attached to them.

That is one of the most ludicrous statements in the history of human language. Singing is an art. If someone can sing, that does, by definition, make them an artist.

You're not creating anything when you sing. Art requires creation.

Though provocative in substance, the titilation is well planned, and her presentation lavish. Much like Madonna, Miley knows her audience, and supplies it with a zesty charm which few can rival. Her torso is that of a ballarina, and her voice can soar like the greatest of songbirds. We, friends, are witnessing the golden era of Miley, and it is fleeting, as all youthful things are. Enjoy the parade while it lasts, as longevity might not be a word clearly associated to Miley and her career.

I just hope that all the people defending Miley's right to act like a skank have daughters some day. And I hope those teenage daughters dress in barely there clothes, and flash their asses all over town. Only then will you unevolved cave men realize your own hypocrisy, and maybe start treating women with more class.

 

Honestly, before I read the comments on here, I was convinced that her fan-base consisted almost exclusively of young girls. Apparently, I have much yet to learn about mainstream culture.
