I used it a couple of months ago, to download Firefox

 

there were one site here from the government that required IE to work, but finally (starting last year) it now works with Chrome so I use that instead to access the site. (FF is still a no go though)

 

It's really dumb when sites do that. It's one thing if your site is some kind of app that needs a special feature that is only available in the newest versions of a browser or two. Even in that case, they should test for that specific feature (not the browser as a whole) and show an error message only those cases.

Instead, they decide to "support" certain browsers and completely block access to others even though the site is still functional in them. That's the way "enterprise software" goes though. Banks, airlines and governments get scammed by the larger development shops that crank out shitty site after shitty site, never improving their methods because it's cheaper not to.

It's usually just a user agent string check. You could try a plugin to switch it, or Chrome has that built in to the dev tools (F12).

 

it was a login feature that didn't work (or so they said). and I agree it's very very dumb, it didn't matter what version of IE you used, I even tried an old IE version 5 or whatever version that came with the first win XP and that worked just fine, but FF version 24.something didn't. Though it seems that the ip "experts" working for the government aren't particularly smart

Yep, there's nothing that IE can do in the way of login features that other browsers can't. The vast majority of things you need a website to do for basic functionality work in all browsers. It's usually an outside contractor that gets hired and does a lazy job figuring they can provide better "support" if they narrow the allowed browsers to begin with. Sometimes they even do this for, excuse the excessive air quotes, "security purposes", which is ironic because they are usually making people use a generally less secure browser in the process.

yeah, I find nothing secure in using IE 6 (took a while to figure that one out) compared to FF 22 (which was the newest version when I tested it last time)
