    That's through buck skin (deer leather), so nothing to really get there. I'm not seeing much poking through either - the first image is kind of grainy and I think anything there is just artifacts from compression and/or just a LQ image blown up.

    No, you really can't. The image is incredibly grainy, and when adjusting the gamma, I get an insane amount of compression artefacts, that I'd dare say we'd never know if we were looking at the real deal, or just noise and wishful thinking.
