Never heard of that show. Interpret the theme however you want was the idea. Perhaps you should add that to the description One.

BTW Cy, you were right about the animation on that sig. I actually posted an unfinished version by mistake and didn't have time to upload the right one once I'd realised.

I knew that jerky snap couldnt be right, I just thought the filesize screwed you over.

The light effect over the girl was really spot on. Lens flare is hard to make look good, but in this case it worked excellently. why no lighting on the text? even a perspective shadow angling right would have been an improvement. Or is it a style thing I'm just not seeing?

Truth is I'm just pretty useless at knowing where light source and shadows should be cast and tend to use them for aesthetic purposes only.

What do you guys think of changing the theme to something a bit different? We all seem kinda bored with the repetitious contest themes. What about contests with a different angle? Instead of the subject being the contest how about a technical aspect?

    examples:
    best gradient usage
    best animation
    best lighting
    best texture
    best freestyle background
    best text
    best border

    etc.

when a winner chooses the next contest and wants it to be best text(whatever), winner chooses the font+size+style then contestants are free to make whatever their entry is using those qualifiers "Sans+80+italic" or whatever.

Just an idea that might add a bit of rejuvenating interest in sotw.

I actually don't mind it so much, I do get a bit bored with the themes sometimes (includes my own suggestions sometimes, I often draw a blank and can't think of anything good) but we've seen some pretty unusual themes this past year so i think we're doing okay really. It's just a general malaise thing and lack of interest overall that's affecting entry numbers and voting, not boredom with this type of sig competition.

And one guy's "Boring..." is another guy's "I know just the thing!" natch.

I like the basic idea and I'd be in favour of at least trying it even if I didn't.

But I see a problem immediately: people won't vote on that criterion.

We see 'off-topic voting' all the time, where the theme is whatever it is but someone will vote on entry #2 merely because they like blue, will vote for their favourite celeb regardless of the quality of any of the competition etc.

Yes, but it's all in phun and the spirit of creativity anyway. Does anyone really bother if they win or lose? I mean really? It's nice to get a few comments for your work but I don't see anyone sitting at home praying that they win.

I like idea of trying something different. If everyone has to learn new skills then all of our abilities will increase and all our work will be better. I like it.

Well, how about the winner chooses the overall theme, and the runner-up chooses a technical aspect?

IDK, just trying to pep things up and give us a little variety. Besides, if a criteria is to use animation in your entry I'll be forced to try animation one more time, which seems to be about the only way I will lol

Oh yeah, but that's normal. I gave up on people voting for the theme instead of content in the JLH days

if you have some suggestions for a change I'd be happy to at least listen. I have tried a few ideas of mine with no luck or having them catch on.

and as GUI said, people vote sometimes just for the sake of voting for something blue, so making it too much complicated doesn't help.

just one thing, and I'm moving this discussion over to this thread..

    inputs?

I'm happy to try something different. I don't actually like choosing themes myself and always end up picking something completely random.

Also, what Jamms said certainly applies to me. I couldn't give a damn about winning and just enjoy taking part when I can, so I'd be fine with having a go at creating something that's a bit different and perhaps out of my comfort zone, should that situation arise. Seeing as most of the sigs don't get used I'd also be up for having a bigger maximum size too, as long as it's stipulated before the round starts.

Out of interest, are we still gonna go with a theme for this round? I haven't made a sig for it yet and don't wanna waste time making one if we're not.

same here. It isnt about winning, it's about seeing what I can do or trying something new (at least for me).

I'd like it better if the contest part were more specific, but we already know how that ends up from the sigduel days.
