A ? because, as far as her face is concerned, it doesn't truly look like her to me, but found the image on another forum in her thread, and the body is certainly consistent. So, going with that. I take encouragement from this effort because, if memory serves well, I believe I took a shot at it some time ago and couldn't get anything satisfying at all from it. But this end result, I think, is pretty good. So, maybe I'm getting better at this whole x-raying thingy.

The pic vintage is right, but I agree, it's not Heather Thomas.

You're on the right track. The suit hue is still a little yellow, a little magenta would help. Saturation is a little flat on the suit as well, not quite matching exposed skin. The blue remnants along the edges of the suit could be blended a little more...a duplicate layer, set to color, then hit it with Reduce Graininess filter at a setting of about 75 should blend it (quick fix). Or, use the Polygonal Lasso tool to selectively remove the blue bits (after feathering selection) from a top duplicate, then adjust a bottom layer copy for the correct color (more labor intensive). Keep up the good werk. :)

Thanks for the reply and the input. First, if not Heather Thomas, who then? Any guesses? Anyone?

Second, you and ICeleb talk in a language I don't (yet) understand. My methods are apparently quite primitive as I don't know how to layer or multipy or any of the other more advanced things you guys talk about. All my images are single layered works with multiple adjustments (and experimentation), as needed. So, query: where do I go to learn the more advanced techniques? I would like to improve my skill and it appears there is still a level or two to reach above my current skill level. Oh, and I use Gimp Shop. Maybe time to invest in Photoshop?

I don't know who she is...though she kinda looks like a cross between Heather Thomas and Morgan Fairchild...the latter of which she is also not. Some late 70s / early 80s model is my best guess. BTW, don't worry too much about your newness. Everybody started somewhere. My early werk was pretty crap...not that I claim my current stuff is great. :p

Sorry 'bout the techno-babble, I assumed you were using Photoshop. The newest version of Gimp I have is 2.611 (portable), though it's not actually installed. I do know Gimp can handle layers and that's the biggest secret to shooping stuff. It's all about the layering. I could be more specific, if I'd actually worked with Gimp in the past couple years. There are plenty of tutorials on the interwebs (a Google away). Poke around for some Gimp ones. They really can be quite helpful. :)

Personally, I rely on Photoshop 7.0 (found edition). Prior to that, I used Photo Deluxe 4.0 and Photo Impact 4.2. The names of the tools and filters aren't standard between any of these progies, so it can be a bit daunting when your just starting out. Keep plugging away at it and try not to get discouraged. :D

Not discouraged at all. I feel like I'm getting some decent results now and from reading some of the posts, I realize there's a whole nother level to achieve. I'm happy to contribute those that come out reasonably well. Trust me, there's plenty on my computer that aren't up to snuff, so to speak.

Yes, quick search of Mary Stavin revealed a very similar shot as the one I x-rayed. Oh well, it's not like there aren't many x-rayable shots of Ms. Thomas!!!

You definitely get the prize for spotting that one - it looks like a still from the 1986 movie "House" starring William Katt (from "The Greatest American Hero" TV series fame). Mary just played a small part in the movie - mostly T&A as I remember.

Max, the software used is less important than the subject matter. The skills to do a good job just come with time & practice. I'd recommend trying out your hand on known good images first, and see if you can come close to replicating some of the works in this thread - that's one of the reasons I always post the original images with my x-rays. Also, there is not one set of rules when it comes to getting the most out of an image - the amount of light & color of clothing often makes a difference as to the exact formula used to get more out of an image, so you'll really have to play around with the basic controls to see what works best for the given subject. Lighter colors tend to need less brightness, and darker ones typically need more. Brighter colors often need the saturation reduced before increasing the contrast or it just washes out any details.

I'd recommend a beginner limit themselves to only using Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and maybe Hue adjustments as they really can't be used to fake an image (whether on purpose of not) since they affect an entire region, and not a precise area like some of the more localized tools can. As far as layering, it just allows the adjustments to affect the specific area (like the bikini) instead of the whole image. I use layering to further separate my body parts for enhanced shadowing & colorization for a more realistic effect once the details are brought out by the basic BCS methods already described.

Unfortunately most images are not good x-ray candidates, so just expect that most of the time there won't be a prize waiting to be discovered, but don't get discouraged, and if there's a set of images, try the basics on several images in the set, as often different lighting conditions or flash levels from different angles make for better pics, so you're looking for just the right combination. Typically white clothing works best when it's not in the bright sun light as too much is reflected, and black works best with bright flashes than can penetrate the fabric and bounce back off the skin to the camera lens.
