The only time the word "bikini" only refers to the bottom is when you're talking about a man's bikini, and that's only because there's no such thing as a man's bikini top. And Speedo is a brand of swimsuit, not a kind of swimsuit. A speedo is still a bikini.

Avril is wearing a bikini top in these pics, therefore "Avril Bikini Pics" is a perfectly accurate title.

Nope, he is right. In my country "bikini" is just the bottom and we have a separate word for the top, both parts makes a swimsuit. The word "bikini" is also used for a panties (underwear). And if you call the man's swimwear "bikini" it would be incorrect and even laughable. I think it's this way in many European countries.

 

Just because a word gets used wrong doesn't change the actual meaning. Bikini is a catch-all term for a two-piece bathing suit, not referring to just one piece or the other. There are bikini-style briefs that draw their name from being cut to mimic bikini bottoms, but did anyone really click on the thread thinking they were going to see Avril in her undies? And even though she has shorts on over the bikini bottoms, she's still wearing the full bikini.

Just because it has fallen out of popular usage due to its feminine connotations doesn't mean that's not what they're actually called.

The whole point is that when he says "I see no bikini," he's wrong, because technically the top part of the swimsuit is just as much a bikini as the bottoms. It isn't up for debate, and just because you and your buddies call it something else doesn't mean that the definition changes.
