its amazing how upbeat Bruce Springsteen can make very depressing songs(at least depressing in my opinion)

glory days, i know a lot of older people who are just like that talking about their high school days, nothing in the past 30 years ever surpassed those few years, seems pretty depressing to me

 

Oh yeah. Well, I think there's a little more to it than what you think. That song is about nostalgia. People love to reminisce and sort of rewrite history, editting out the bad from the good. Makes for a good feeling, but few are actually fooling themselves. It's more in good fun, especially when you run across an old friend you haven't seen in years. It's not meant to marginalize the rest of your accomplishments since. That's what Springsteen is really trying to convey in that song.

Think about running into someone you haven't seen since you were 10 or 11 years old and had a great summer experience with. You'd talk that up because it's something you both share in common, as opposed to what has transpired in your lifetimes since. You see what I mean?

 

i know too many people who only talk about it though, same stories, thats what the song reminds me of, i understand talking about good times you had, but that song to me seems like hes talking about how fast your glory days are gone, and then its nothing until you die, and all you have are the memories of your glory days
