Since all international calls are relayed via satellite I don't understand why it costs more to call from the USA to Canada than it does to call overseas. It's a fuckin' scam is what it is. :x

Because they know more people need to call Canada than China......more cash.

You're wrong there, as far as the USA is concerned. I'd be willing to bet that telecommunications between the US and China are just as heavy, if not more so, as those between here and Canada. We do a ton of trade with China, millions of Chinese live here, thousands of US businesses have interests there in one way or another.... etc.

    No. It's a fucking scam. :x

China was just a random example, calling from here US and UK are the cheapest (comparatively) because obviously that's where most people want to call....Europe is slightly more expensive, then Australia, New Zealand are even more.

But then again that's just from my cell phone, I don't know about land lines, for cell phones the companies need to strike up a deal with the operating companies there as well...and no I don't think a regular international call runs through satellite....because I have satellite listed as a different fee.

There are fiber optic lines that run between continents, but not all of them in all possible configurations. And just because they have satellite listed as a different fee doesn't mean when you make an international call that a satellite won't be used when you don't already have the satellite service. It just means they're going to charge you more for dedicated satellite service, yet another scam. Telecommunications has become nothing but a big fuckin' scam since it was deregulated in the late 1970's.

No, I just looked it up, most international calls are done via fiber optic cables, satellite service is completely different.

None of our cell phones use satellites for making calls....or for anything I think....even the gap maps, I don't think our phones have a direct link to the satellite....only the company does and your phone gets the information via the company.

I'm not talking about sat uplinks from your cell phone, you need a sat phone for that. I'm talking about switching and transfers. Some are made via cable and others are done via satellite, depending on traffic and local-to-local destinations. But the larger point I'm trying to get across to you is we're all being ripped off for our mobile service. It really, truly, honest to god does not cost more to make a call on a cell phone than it does on a land line. It did once upon a time when the network was in it's infancy, but not anymore.

Well, yeah, transfers are probably at times made via satellite.

And we're being ripped of for everything....the ignorant don't see it and the others try to ignore it.

Living itself has become overated, a person works more in his lifetime than he ever relaxes, and at least 70% off the population are unhappy with their jobs...so that's 51% of your life spend in drudgery to accommodate the other 49% out of which 30% will probably be spend recovering from that labour.

choosing to believe in Nothingness--involves a high price. An individual may choose to “feel” rather than think, exert their “will to power” than pray, give thanks, or obey God. After an impressive career of literary and philosophical creativity

"Friedrich Nietzsche argued that its corrosive effects would eventually destroy all moral, religious, and metaphysical convictions and precipitate the greatest crisis in human history."

Nietzsche, of course, was more of a pessimist than a skeptic. I find most thought of nihilism to be so barren as to be worthless.

No matter how for shit life can be, it's much worse if you harbor no hope at all. In that case why bother to exist at all? It's certainly not living. Eat a gun and be done with it.

What you're saying is basically if there is no hope or reason then it's not worth living, which sounds rather like most religious views

I don't think nihilism indents to impart hopelessness, there can still be highs and lows, just the eventuality is nothing.......sort of like a drive with no destination....there will still be sights to see.

No. That's not what I'm saying. I'm a skeptic tried and true, and though I'm not immune to negativism, I'm no pessimist. I have hope that when things seem to be at their worst - or dullest, or least interesting, or most stressful, or.... etc - that there is a glimmer of possibility that something better is on the way. No body actually needs a reason to live, since you weren't actually given the choice in the first place, but the pursuit is half the fun. If you just sit around thinking it's all for nought in the end - even if that proves true - then you're just cheating yourself of the what the journey holds.
Then you're not thinking of nihilism as commonly defined:
Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism that condemns existence.
Contemplating what the eventual outcome is seems rather pointless to me, unless you're talking about achieving some sort of goal you set for yourself. If you're speaking rhetorically or metaphysically I don't see a point in speculating, unless it's for the simple sake of speculation itself.
