I graduated right after the '73-'74 oil embargo......an equal recession as we have today......had to take a position as a draftman even though I was a graduate engineer.....it paid about 40% of the engineer's salary.....as a result, I also worked two part-time jobs.....one as a short order cook and the other as a tire jockey for Sears Automotive......that lasted about 2 years, then I got an engineering position and things got better then.

have you been on welfare this whole time then?

    hey now! :p

    Yeah...

  4. Nope. My full time job has been helping out my family the last few years. So what expenses I have had, has come out of my savings... selling stuff... etc. Since I haven't had to pay rent and what not.

Well, the economy will come back....it always has. So keep the faith and do what you can to prepare yourselves for the type of work you want to do. I knkow a lot of people are really hurting now and I really feel for them. Americans are a tough lot and the country will rebound. However, we need to government to do the right things to encourage the re-industrialization of this country. There is a new frontier out there in alternative energy development. Incentives need to be provided for both the development, manufacturing, and installation of these various energy sources as petroleum dependency is a threat to both our economy and our national security......that is just one example.....

  7. When you don't pay rent, don't have a car and no cellphone... you be surprised how far a bit of money can go.

    Hmmmm....getting late.......the pup has gone "night-night."

  9. Oh, I don't have a job because of the economy. I could have one, I suppose. But then all my money go into paying rent and what not. So I figure I can not work and help out my family. Or work, spend all my money on bills and so forth while not helping my family out. So... the choice is obvious.

Yep....there is much most people think are necessities that really are not.......eliminate those and the cost of living shrinks dramatically.....even with a house payment, I lived on less than $400 a month in the early to mid 1970's....Kills me to see welfare and food stamp recipients with blue tooth smart phones. Not to mention nicer cars than I drive.....

  12. Why up so long?

Ya, if you just boil it down to the necessities... you really don't spend much at all.

Cool......everybody has a different set of circumstances, etc. That is why I no longer make judgments. I do have a problem with the government assisting folks and they have a standard of living above many of those who are working and not getting government assistance....that's all.

remember that crappy day job I was talking about earlier? yeah, it's cause of that :p

and I think I'm gonna turn in for the evening, you guys have a good one

  15. Ya, despite not having a job for years... I have never been on any sort of assistance despite the fact that I have qualified the entire time. Though earlier this year, I did have to get on it briefly when lots of unforeseen bills arose after my mother's death. But I am off it now, as I don't absolutely have to be on it... as that is the only time people really should be on it.
