My first live jazz gigs (for money) were sightreading gigs (read the music on the spot). Scared the shit out of me. I was about 20, and I was playing with some established Detroit guys.

I used to drink Maalox out of the bottle driving to and from those jazz gigs. I always had a bottle of Maalox in my car.

DUDE, that's farkin' scary. I used to play classical piano for like 10 years and was only an average sightreader... unless you're sightreading everyday, it's pretty intimidating.

It's comforting to some people, I guess.

    Who are your favorites, mok?

I practiced sightreading every day. I'd actually take the book and turn it upside down and play it that way, too. Yep: Backwards. I knew I had to be the best possible, so I chewed through sightreading practice books like candy.

The hardest is Latin/Afro-Cuban. It can kill a man.

Then I went Top 40 for a living at age 25. Lost my good Latin and jazz chops, 'cause I never needed to practice it.

I can listen to Lester Young any time during the day... simple intonations, fantastic technique, and lots of subtle feeling. As a former piano player, I really enjoy Cyrus Chestnut and Oscar Peterson.

Drumming is a little out of my league of appreciation, but always did enjoy Art Blakey.

I studied formal percussion, too (keyboard percussion, etc.), for a while. And took piano lessons from age 7-9.

JC Heard (noted late jazz drummer from Detroit) and I would talk on his breaks when he played at a club here. His fave piano player was Peterson. ... Art Blakey was a monster -- I really like his playing.

I had to double-check. The time line runs right through the middle. Half is Eastern time, half is Central time.
