I have no idea about the rules. From an outsider view I personally hate the crap that appears to come with the Super bowl, such as all the advertising and stuff.

You just advance the ball and try to get across the goal line, or kick it over the goal line through the uprights.

Now with the time difference I have been out of touch..

It's become more of a holiday -- a reason to party -- than anything else here. Sometimes the game is a great game, sometimes not. So that's why you get all the hoopla.

 

That's more or less what I thought but there seem to be a lot of stoppages and stuff. It's similar to rugby really, I just can't seem to get into it.

 

It's definitely an iconic event. They show it on the BBC here now so it's popularity must be growing in Britain too. I just can't get into it just like I can't with rugby, which is one of our top 3 national sports.

There is less commercialism. (That causes a lot of the stoppages.)

 

I mean I get a bit pissed off with modern day football (soccer) where you have a lot of stoppages due to overly protective referees. It's always more enjoyable when they let the game flow.

 

American football consists of organized "plays" (a pass or a run). When one play is over, there is a time clock that allows the team with the ball 25 seconds to huddle and organize the next play. And so on. A team has 4 chances to advance the ball 10 yards. If a team cannot advance the ball 10 yards, it has to turn the ball over to the other team. But now there are commercials between team possessions, and even between plays.
